[Jesco White]

G'day,

Looking for specs on this amplifier:

Don't know much at this stage, apart from 4Watts drive (@ 430-480MHz)=
approx. 150W output, draws well over 30A from my poor struggling power
supply. I'm not game to up the drive any further until I know the specs!

Basically any specs or any info at all would be great, thanks in advance.

Let's take a wild guess here, you want to use it on the UHf Chook Band to
talk into the 5 w output repeaters, if that's the case, and I do hope I'm
wrong, you'd be better off with a decent antenna system,

Amazing isn't it - cannot discuss power amplifiers in these
Aussie groups without the usual knee-jerk assumptions, irrespective of
being perfectly within the law to own and use in an appropriate manner.
Apparently no Hams here use amplifiers I guess.

I own a very nice Henry thanks , not used for a while but at 400 watts
it doesn't get even beyond warm on tune when running .

Been a few years, but looks like a PA out of either a MSR2000 or
MSF5000 repeater. In any case, I'd say you were overdriving it with 4
watts, as indicated by the 150 watts out. Its probably a 100 or 110 watt
amplifer. I believe that most Motorola exciters for such amplifiers
put out either 1 watt or possibly 2 watts.

state exactly what your using it for and post in the appropiare group.

technical specs, whilst there are some people in this newsgroup who actually

The general consensus is that it did indeed come from an MSF5000, I
started a thread over at batlabs just prior to posting to these groups,
which has paid off somewhat
(see: http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.php?t=63653&unwatch=topic )
but now of course there is also some conflicting info in the replies...
info on Motorola gear can be hard to find!

I'll play it safe and keep it below 3W until I get definite confirmation
of the specs being different. Cheers

Thanks for your suggestion re: batlabs, I did post a question there on
this matter prior to posting to these groups. I have received a few good
replies, but still seeking those elusive specifications.

Good idea. I worked on Motorola, etc, for the past 35 years, up to
and including MSF5000 UHF like you have. Best I can recollect, never had
an PA that took more than 1 or 2 watts drive..... I could be wrong,
maybe.... its been a couple years.

Hello Jasco , I'm going to do something I don't do very often and that is
apologise for jumping to conclusions, I must admit when I read your original
posting I thought, here we go again, some UHf CBer wanting info on a very
high powered Amp, so he can stomp on every one else, for that I do
apologise, in my role as an emergency monitor I get quite a few of the power
heads deliberately interfering with the emergency repeaters which I monitor
daily, I have even had dead set deliberate interference during actual
emergency calls and whilst in contact with the Police Comms Centre, as in,
microphone in one hand and the phone in the other, the Police couldn't
believe what they heard, so I tend to get a bit touchy when it comes to very
high power on UHf CB.

now back to the Amp, I see on the circuit board there is JAS marked in
several places, I'm wondering if this is the manufactures identification, if
so you might get some info from this mob,

Maybe here, more info on MSF5000 if you already haven't got this

The following info has nothing to do with Motorola , but I recently
purchased a Philips 828 back end (25 Watt PA from 828 radio) which has been
modded so as to run a hand held 2 Mtr , there was no info available with it
regarding input power, and me being a silly bugger didn't think to ask the
bloke I bought it from :-) ( Hamfest ), so at first I set the h/h to 5 W
max, the amp output was 25W, then I set the radio to low power, 0.5 W , the
output was then 20 W, so I came to the conclusion to run it at low power 0.5
W, as that would most probably be the safe input power, 5 W input only
raised the output by around 5 W not worth potentially blowing the driver or
something major, unless of course the driver had been changed to a more
robust type ?, in your case, maybe try at 1W then say 3W and see what the
output difference is , if it's only 5 or 10 W on higher input power of 3 W
its probably safe to run it at 1 W input,

Hello atec77, thanks for the verification, much appreciated, I really should
have thought to ask the fellow I bought it from at the Gold Coast Hamfest,
but it didn't occur to me at the time, I really went down to buy some
N-Connectors as they have had them before, mixed types secondhand in a
plastic bag for around $15 , wouldn't you know it, there wasn't any there
haha, ah well, ya get that :-) ,

You see, I bet, and this is just a guess mind you, that the part of the
headers that solicited a comment was:

And in particular:

"aus.radio.cb"

Seeing as most people posting in this group about high powered UHF gear are
actually referring to high powered UHF CB equipment.....

The fact that you posted no indication that you were seeking info for
Amateur operation but did refer to the frequency range being up to 480MHz,
again within the scope of UHF CB, probably only strengthened that fear...

But that's just my opinion, after all I'm still learning to read Usenet
