Astronauts use roger beeps which, incidentally, remain quite legal in
the amateur dog and pony arena.

Legal but obnoxious. Of course that is the reputation you want anyway.

BTW: the beeps used in astronaut communications has a functional
application in that it is used to operate the various transmitters used
in space communications.
