Default LMR400 connector ?

I have some LMR400 and it seems like a standard
PL259 will work, but not quite as mechanically
strong as it would be on RG-8,. i.e., the shield does not
fit real snugly like it would on RG-8. Is there something
else that is used for LMR400 or is it just the standard
PL259 ?

Just use some heat shrink tubing to add thickness.

Make that "flooded" heat shrink.
It's available from most electrical supply houses in either one meter,
or 3 foot lengths (forget which but the difference is small).
The cost is about the same as a *small* package of heat shrink tubing
at radio shack.

When you get done you will have one strong connection.

I use LMR400 exclusively and I never noted the connectors fitting
loosely.

I use both N connectors and PL-259s.
BTW, the N connectors come with flooded heat shrink.
