#
Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
10 - 16 June 2013

Solar activity was at very low to low levels during the period. The
period started off with an isolated C1/Sf flare at 10/1424 UTC from
Region 1765 (N08, L=052, class/area Dai/210 on 09 June). By 11 June,
Region 1765 was the only spotted region left on the visible disk but
only managed to produce several B-class flares. On 12 June, rapid
flux emergence was observed on the southwest quadrant of the solar
disk and was numbered as Region 1768 (S11, L=356, class/area Dko/320
on 14 June). Although 1768 was the largest region on the visible
disk during the rest of the period, it failed to produce any
substantial flare activity. Solar activity continued at very low
levels until early on 14 June, when Region 1769 (S22, L=261,
class/area Cro/020 on 14 June) produced a long duration C1/Sf flare
at 14/0031 UTC with an associated Type II radio sweep reported at
14/0021 UTC (431 km/s). Solar activity continued at low levels for
the rest of the period with an isolated long duration C1 flare at
15/0400 UTC from Region 1774 (S19, L=238, class/area Cro/030 on 16
June) and a C1/Sf from Region 1769 at 16/1020 UTC. No Earth-directed
coronal mass ejections were observed during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached
moderate levels through the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to active levels. Unsettled
to active levels with an isolated minor storm period at high
latitudes was observed for the first half of 10 June due to possible
activity associated with a shock arrival from a non Earth-directed
CME from 07 June. During this time, total field (Bt) increased from
approximately 4 nT to 9 nT while the Bz component varied from +8 nT
to -8 nT before calming to more nominal levels by midday on 10 June.
Solar wind speed increased briefly on 10 June from approximately 350
km/s to 419 km/s by 10/1514 UTC before decreasing back to 360 km/s
by early 11 June. A slow increase in solar wind speed occurred on 11
to 12 June reaching maximum values near 476 km/s by 12/0430 UTC
before declining to background levels through the rest of the
period. The geomagnetic field was mostly quiet with an isolated
unsettled period midday on 11 June. Conditions declined to quiet
levels for the rest of the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
17 June - 13 July 2013

Solar activity is expected to be at predominantly very low to low
levels. There is a chance for M-class (R1-Minor) flares from 18 June
through 08 July due to potential flare activity from old Region 1762
(S30, L=129) and two new regions observed in STEREO A/B EUVI 195
imagery located to the northwest of old Region 1765 (N08, L=052) and
southwest of old Region 1757 (S08, L=148).

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at high levels from 22 June through 07 July due to
coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) activity. Normal to moderate
levels are expected for 17-21 June and 08-13 July.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be quiet to unsettled on
17-18 June due to weak CH HSS activity. Mostly quiet conditions are
expected on 19-20 June. A recurrent CH HSS is expected to become
geoeffective from 21-24 June causing unsettled to active levels with
a chance for minor storm (G1-Minor) conditions. Mostly quiet levels
are expected from 25-27 June. From 28 June through 01 July, another
CH HSS is expected to be geoeffective causing unsettled to minor
storm (G1-Minor) levels. Quiet levels are expected to return from
02-04 July. On 05-06 July, a weaker CH HSS is expected to cause
quiet to unsettled levels. From 07 July until the end of the
forecast period, mostly quiet conditions are expected.
He will use a FT817ND w/5w QRP into a homemade multiband dipole. QSL via
his home callsign, direct or by the UBA Bureau (preferred).

V3, BELIZE. Jimmy, W6JKV, will once again be active as V31IV from San
Pedro (WW Loc. EK67), Belize, between June 20th and July 1st. Activity
will be on 80-6 meters. He will probably focus on 6 meters CW. QSL via
his home callsign.

V6, MICRONESIA. Operators Sho/JA7HMZ (V63DX) and Masayuki/JA7ZF (V63ZF)
will once again be active from Pohnpei Island (OC-010) between November
22-30th. Activity will be on all HF bands and modes. QSL via their home
callsigns.

VQ9/VQ93, CHAGOS (Reminder/Update). Just a reminder that Jim, ND9M/VQ9JC,
will once again be active with a special prefix, this time as VQ93JC from
Diego Garcia between June 22nd and July 7th. He usually activates an
unique/special prefix each year (last year it was VQ92JC). Jim informs
OPDX on his current operating conditions: "The rig (FT-857D) that I use
normally for working from the island crapped out on me about half way
through the VQ975FOC operation. I thought I was done for until I remembered
that I'd rescued an Icom IC-760 from the ham shack when the Navy shut it
down. The IC-760 had been donated by a former VQ9 years ago and did not
belong to the Navy, so I snagged it. But there was no way I was going to
lug that thing back and forth to the island every day just for a little
operating, so I set up on the ship and operated from the Lagoon. I was
still using dipoles, but now they were 110 feet above the waterline (and
40,000 tons of metal!) instead of just 30 feet above the ground. Better
still, the IC-760 and dipoles kept me on the air for the duration of the
celebration. Overall, I made 3400 contacts as VQ975FOC. The first 1200
QSOs were from the island; the other 2200 on the ship. Of course, the
QSOs made from the ship will not count for DXCC, and my QSL will be marked
accordingly, but the spirit of this particular special callsign was to
get the FOC callsign 'out there' to give extra points toward the FOC75
award which does not require contacts to be made with land-based stations.
When my FT-857D died, my XYL Cori (KK4CGA) shipped out my back up rig,
a Yaesu FT-897D, it didn't arrive until after the special callsign expired,
but it's here now, and I'm active from the island again. I'm still getting
my radio teeth kicked in since I'm running barefoot into a low dipole,
but VQ9 is back on the air! I'll continue operating from the ship and
may put up a 6M dipole to use with my FT-857D for a beacon. I'll be here
until about July 10th, which would bring me back in mid November."
Just a reminder, when Jim states he is still operating, it is Field
Day style from a recreational park using 100 watts to a dipole at a
height of 10 meters because the VQ9 club station has been shut down.
Jim reports that he has to set up the station each time and then break
it down each day which further limits his operating time typically to
1230-1615z on most days. Sometimes he is on Fridays starting as early
as 0830Z. QSL via ND9M.

YN, NICARAGUA. Members from the Spanish Aitana DX Group (ADXG) will be
active from Octavio, YN2N, radio shack in Nicaragua between October
1-16th. Callsign will be announced soon. Operators mentioned are Javi/
EA5KM (CW), Fer/EA5FX (CW), Eugen/EA5HPX (CW), Fran/EA7FTR (SSB/RTTY),
Jose/EA1ACP (SSB/RTTY) and Carlos/EA1DVY (SSB/RTTY). Pilot station
named is Ismael/EA1AZ. Activity will be on 160-6 meters. Suggested
frequencies are:
CW - 1821, 3521, 7021, 10121, 14021, 18081, 21021, 24901 and 28021 kHz
YOU SCORING

Scoring is done as follows:

-Any proper connection issues: CW - 3 points, SSB - 2 points.

Multipliers are made-Serbian car license plates and tags NY that provide
non-yu cells, which do

during one period.

- Acting as worth three (3) multipliers.

- Own label does not count as a multiplier.

- Each station is allowed to do only once in each period.

- The number of points in one period is obtained by multiplying the sum of
QSO points from a single period to the sum of

multipliers in the period.

- The total score is the total points of all periods.

- Any broken link (incomplete or incorrectly added in writing received
data) will not be counted in the final score.

- The time difference made connections greater than 5 minutes between 2
correspondent, will be considered as proper

connection.

- Call sign to send the log must be registered in at least 10 dailies in
both periods (calculated

and erroneously admitted character), so that such a connection was
recognized by those who have received the correct call sign.

- Call sign which did not send log information must also be registered in
at least 10 dailies in both periods (calculated wrongly admitted and sign),
so that such a connection was recognized by those who have received the
correct call sign.

- Selective reporting only certain stations are not allowed.

VII POWER ADR: ADR Power must be reconciliation licensed operators.
Average daily sunspot numbers declined over 32 points this week to
39.6. Average daily solar flux was down more than 8 points to 99.2.
Tuesday's solar flux at 89.5 was the lowest since June 22-25 of last
year, when values ranged from 84 to 88.6. Likewise, Tuesday's
sunspot number of 14 was also the lowest since June 25, 2012 when
the sunspot number was also 14. Since then both numbers have been
recovering, with Wednesday and Thursday's sunspot numbers at 27 and
45, and solar flux at 93.3 and 98.9.

The latest prediction has solar flux at 105 on June 14-17, 100 on
June 18-19, 105 and 110 on June 20-21, 115 on June 22-24, 110 on
June 25, 105 on June 26-28, and 110 on June 29 through July 4.
Solar flux is expected to reach a minimum of 95 around July 7-8 and
another peak at 115 on July 18-21. Note that ARRL Field Day is June
22-23, right when solar flux is expected to be highest.

The predicted planetary A index is 5 on June 14-16, 8 on June 17-18,
5 on June 19-20, then 25, 18, 10 and 8 on June 21-24, 5 on June
25-27, then 30, 20, 10 and 8 on June 28 through July 1, 5 on July
2-4, 10 on July 5-6, 8 on July 7, and 5 on July 8 through mid-month.

A geomagnetic forecast comes to us this week from Petr Kolman,
OK1MGW, who sees quiet to unsettled conditions June 14, mostly quiet
June 15-18, quiet to unsettled June 19-20, quiet to active June
21-23, quiet to unsettled June 24, quiet June 25-26, quiet to active
June 27, active to disturbed June 28-29, quiet to unsettled June 30
through July 2, quiet to active July 3-4, mostly quiet July 5-6.

Word has come that the link to the W6ELprop installation file at
http://www.qsl.net/w6elprop/ is broken. Until it is restored you can
find it at ftp://150.214.111.198/pub/ham/propag...ropInst270.EXE.

Unfamiliar with FTP? FTP is File Transfer Protocol, and you can
paste that link into your web browser URL window, hit Enter, and a
download dialog should appear. W6ELprop works only on Windows
computers, and with it you can predict propagation from your station
to anywhere else, on any frequency between 3-30 MHz. If you have any
trouble installing, try right-clicking the file and running as
administrator.

The latest NASA prediction for Cycle 24 moves the sunspot peak back
to Summer 2013, but NOAA predicts the peak for the end of this year.
Check pages 16 and 17 at
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/weekly/pdf/prf1970.pdf and note the highest
smoothed sunspot and solar flux numbers are predicted in November
and December 2013. These are smoothed international sunspot numbers,
with a scale quite a bit lower than the Boulder numbers reported
here.
#
Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
13 - 19 May 2013

Solar activity reached high levels during the week, in fact the
highest levels of activity since 2013 began. Between 13 and 14 May,
newly-numbered Region 1748 (N11, L=296, class/area=Eki/310) produced
an X2/1n flare at 13/1605Z and an X3/2b flare at 14/0111Z. Both
events produced several radio emissions. Three Tenflares were
observed at 14/0115Z (640 sfu), 14/0141Z (190 sfu), and 14/0203Z
(370 sfu). A Type-II radio sweep was observed at 14/0107Z with an
estimated velocity of 1514 km/s, in conjunction with a Type-IV radio
sweep at 14/0113Z. SDO/AIA 193A showed a flare on the East limb at
N12 from 14/0009-0154 and 14/0206-0224Z. A dimming and wave was
observed over the east hemisphere and North Pole. Two distinct halo
coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were subsequently observed on LASCO
imagery. The first appeard in C2 coronagraph imagery at 14/0125Z and
grew to a full HALO CME by 14/0224Z. The second event appeared at
14/0200Z with loop edge over the East and expanded to a partial HALO
280 degrees in width.

Solar activity remained at high levels on 15 May. Region 1748 grew
to a Dki/beta-gamma-delta and produced an X1/2n flare at 15/0148Z
associated with a Type II radio sweep (estimated shock speed 501
km/s), a Type IV radio sweep, a 440 sfu Tenflare; and a fast,
assymetric halo CME. The CME speed was observed in LASCO C2
coronagraph imagery at 15/0148Z and expanded to a full HALO CME by
15/0248Z. SDO/AIA 193/211/304 showed the flare at 15/0124-0212Z
which produced a faint dimming in the Northeast and North direction
and a wave over the East hemisphere. The CME had and earthward
component and its western flank reached Earth on 18 May at 0112Z.

Activity declined to moderate levels on 16 May with a single M1
flare from Region 1748 at 16/2153Z. Moderate levels continued
through 17 May when Region 1748 produced an M3/2b flare at 17/0857Z.
Type II (376 km/s) and Type IV radio bursts, as well as a 420 sfu
Tenflare, were observed with this event. At 17/0912Z, LASCO/C2
coronagraph imagery observed a CME erupting from the east limb. It
grew to a full halo CME by 17/0948Z and was estimated to be moving
at approximately 1498 km/s. The CME reached Earth on 19 May at
2221Z.

The remainder of the week was dominated by low levels of activity as
Region 1748 shrank to less than half its largest extent. The largest
flare of the latter part of the week was a C9 observed on the east
limb at 19/1750Z. The other regions on the visible disk throughout
the week were relatively inactive, producing only low-level C-class
activity.

A 10 MeV proton flux greater than 10 pfu at geosynchronous orbit
event began at 15/1325Z, reached a maximum flux of 41 pfu at
17/1720Z, and ended at 18/1445Z. The 10 MeV flux remains enhanced at
the time of this report. The event was attributed to the X1/2n flare
at 15/0148Z.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at
normal to moderate levels all week.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to minor storm levels
with the arrival of two CMEs during the week. The first CME, which
was observed leaving the sun on 15 May, passed the ACE spacecraft at
18/0023Z and arrived at Earth at 18/0112Z with a 31nT sudden
impulse. Activity reached minor storm levels by 18/0300Z and
remained there through the end of the 0300-0600Z synoptic period.
Activity then dropped to active, unsettled, then quiet levels during
the subsequent periods. The following evening, active levels were
observed during the 0000-0300Z synoptic period.

The second CME, which left the sun on 17 May, passed the ACE
spacecraft at 19/2221Z and arrived at Earth at 19/2306Z with a 29nT
sudden impulse. Activity increased to active levels during the
2100-0000Z synoptic period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
20 May - 15 June 2013

Solar activity is expected to be low to moderate throughout the
forecast period. High levels of activity are possible through 25 May
and again after 7 June associated with Region 1748.

There is a chance for proton events at geosynchronous orbit,
particularly through 25 May and again after 7 June associated with
Region 1748.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at high levels from 24-31 May associated with a
recurrent coronal hole high speed stream.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach minor to major storm
levels on 20 May in response to the 17 May coronal mass ejection. In
the absence of any Earth-directed coronal mass ejections, the
remainder of the forecast period is expected to be characterized by
quiet to unsettled levels of activity with the possible exception of
28 May, when another geoeffective coronal hole high speed stream
becomes geoeffective and brings active levels.
