Varicap (Varactor) Paralleling Madness by Charlie_V
Hi everyone, I'm working on an experiment where I want to investigate the nonlinear effects of a varicap (varactor). The problem is that I need the capacitance to be very large.... very very large. I found a suitable varicap (BB640), having a capacitance ratio of about 25 times with a maximum...

ARM programming? by gareth
Of those _REAL_ radio amateurs who are taking up the excellent opportunities for homebrewing in the field of computer programming, I wonder how many are doing it in ARM assembler? And of those, how many are doing it from the ground up, with no supporting OS?

Canary Islands Internet Law? by gareth
Most jurisdictions these days have some form of penalty against stalking on the Internet, anybody know what the Canary islands does about it? Unfortunately, despite attempts to make him desist, this may be the only way to deal with tomlinson.

Home manufacturing? by gareth
I wonder what the extent of home manufacturing of componenets is these days, apart from, say, microphones, earphones and Morse keys?

60 / 40? by gareth
I wonder how many are still using the 60 / 40 (lead / tin or tin / lead?) solder despite the Common Market (or whatver they call themselves these days) ruling that lead free must be used to the exclusion of all else? And how many are not using any solder at all because they are a variant of...

The end of the profiteering emporia? by gareth
With the arrival of the Raspberry Pi 0 at £5, and with the basis of a complete QRP TRX for the Raspberyy Pi already having been published, (see hackaday.com) and as most of what makes for a modern TRX is not the RF paths but encapsulated in software, is this the start of the slippery path for the...

High power tuning caps? by gareth
As we seem to be winning the battle in part against the ne'er-do-wells and their attention-seeking gratuitously abusive personal attacks, what technical matters can we discuss today to keep the momentum going? How about is anyone still making their own wide spaced tuning caps for their ATUs...

Which tubes are still currently produced? by Stefan Bürbaum
Are there any russian tubes that are still in production? A lot of new designs were constructed with GS35b and co. The 8877 we produced yet for Ameritron? I know that RF Parts manufactured some tubes, the 8877 too? The GS35b is a good tube but is apparently no longer in production, Just like most...

Just musing by gareth
As some know, I've had a pipe dream for over 50 years that someday I'd produce a world beater RX but from older technology (and some have responded in an abusive manner thereto, going against the gentlemanly tradition of amateur radio, shame on them :-( ) I've spoken in the past about how much I...

Scratchy? by gareth
On the basis that someone must manufacture the things in the first place, has anyone much experience of disassembling volume controls and the like to deal with scratchiness, for AIUI, injecting WD40 although seeming to provide an interim solution (sic) only stores up problems for the future.

Obsolescence? by gareth
Today the si570 magic oscillator seems to satisfy all our VFO requirements in terms of stability, frequency range and frequency increments, but will it always be there, for don't forget that the Plessey SL600 series was the answer to a maiden's prayer in its time but now is no longer available?

AM and FM bandwidths? by gareth
With the trend for 9 Mhz IFs and other crystal ladder filters at those sorts of frequencies, what do people adopt for the reception of AM and FM, interpolation to a lower frequency, say, 455 kHz? LC filtering at 9MHz being very broad band

Crank up tower question by [email protected]
I just bought a three section 60 ft crank up tower from a guy for 200.00. I plan on cranking this up to about 45 feet and hanging an Alpha Delta inverted V dipole, (80 through 6 meters) on it. The tower has a triangular hinge plate on the bottom which is connected to two of the tower posts with two...

antenna connected to ground by kurt stocklmeir
I think when an antenna has the wrong size it helps to connect the antenna to the ground and this helps to make the size right - I think the ground helps to this more flexible I guess when an antenna is small a lot of charge can get around 1 end and can be bad I do not know why a big antenna...

[KC8LDO] Anybody using LiFePO4 Sealed Lead Acid form factor batteries with solar panels for a small portable or emergency power system? by Leland C. Scott
I'm looking at getting one from K2 Energy. After showing the guy at K2 the list price for the Bienno battery he knocked 30% off the list price. It's the same size as a 7 ah gel cell at half the weight. The datasheet claims it can do 25 amps continuous output which should be good enough for a 100...

Information on ceramic filter by AF6AY
In a box of traded parts I found a cylindrical object labeled "Clevite Ceramic Filter TL10D16A" that may be some sort of IF filter according to very dusty old memory files. I would appreciate it if anyone knows of this brand and can give me an approximate center frequency and, perhaps,...
