Default TV type Ferrite Cores / Ferrite Cores / Magnetic Longwire Baluns (MLBs) and more

DAVE,
..
FWIW - The smaller TV type Binocular (Two Hole) Ferrite
Cores will work OK. They can be build if you use small
enough Magnet Wire. However, If you live in an area that
has frequent Thunder and Lightening Storms and you have
a 50 Foot or more long Wire Antenna Element. You may
find that your Balun burns out very easily due to near
by T&L Strikes.
..
..
FERRITE CORES :
Here are two Ferrite Cores that can be used to build
your own Matching Transformer.

..
Binocular (Two Hole) Core
For a 9:1 Matching Transformer:
- Antenna to Ground Primary Windings = 15 Turns
- Coax Cable Secondary Windings = 5 Turns

# 0471 - BN-43-202 Two Hole Core
..
Ferrite Toroidal (Donut) Core
For a 9:1 Matching Transformer:
- Antenna to Ground Primary Windings = 30 Turns
- Coax Cable Secondary Windings = 10 Turns

Most Random Wire (Long Wire) Antennas use a so called
Magnetic Longwire Balun (MLB). These are 9:1 Matching
Transformenrs as shown here; and are in-fact "UnUns".

Given that the ferrite in a VHF and/or UHF television balun
is most probably designed for those higher frequencies,
even better results would most likely result if you had
a ferrite core better suited for the SW bands.
