Generally, if you don't want to lose memories, you should replace the
battery while the radio is operating.

I don't know about that radio specifically but if you can find the battery
by opening the radio and disassembling it enough, then switch on the power
and replace it.

Some radios don't use lithium batteries. Those that do, generally use the
same size unit, with either solder tabs or printed circuit mount tabs. You
can solder wires on to one without tabs. Nothing critical here. They last
several years; if yours has gone dead then you don't need to replace it with
the power on.

???????

Personally, I wouldn't replace anything in any radio with the power on.
Suppose he dropped the battery and it shorted out something on the board. I
bet he would be wishing he used common sense and turned the rig off. The
battery is a CR2032 3V available at any Radio Shack or camera store. If it
is soldered to the board, you can salvage a holder of an old motherboard and
use it. But please, turn the power off no matter wat. The TS50 is too good
a radio to damage. Memory channels can be replaced a lot cheaper than a
radio can.
