GB2RS NEWS

Sunday 25th July 2010

The news headlines

It's IOTA weekend

G2 and M1 QSL managers change

ROS digimode may ride again

This weekend is the RSGB IOTA Contest. The contest runs from noon UTC on
Saturday to the same time on Sunday, and operation is in the 3.5, 7, 14,
21 and 28MHz bands. Many clubs and individuals will be activating
islands around the world, some of which are rarely heard on the air.
Don't forget that all amateurs on the British Isles are automatically
operating from an island, so will be keenly sought by others overseas.
Full details are at www.iotacontest.com.

The QSL sub manager for the G2 series, John Godfrey, M0JOH, is currently
recovering in hospital from a major operation. The RSGB team wish to
thank him for his service to his fellow amateurs,ša speedy recovery and
a prompt return to the bands. His place has been taken by Anthony Nowell
RS94177, making G1 and G2 calls a combined QSL group. There are also
major changes to the handling of QSL cards for M1 call signs, due to
changing levels of activity. 6 groups have now been absorbed into a
single M1 series, under the former M1F-Z manager Martyn Wheal, 2E0MWW.
The RSGB wishes to thank Anthony, RS94177, Mike, GM6OFO, Ted, G3DRN,
Neville, G0DQJ and Chris, G7NRO for their invaluable help with the M1
series Other call groups that are handled by some of these volunteers
are unaffected. For details of these and all other changes, please check
the Members area of the RSGB web site, QSL section.

Last week we reported that development work had been stopped on new
digital mode ROS after the author posted to that effect on his blog.
Since then there have been unconfirmed rumours that JosÊ Alberto Nieto
Ros has relented and is continuing development work. GB2RS News has
tried to contact the author but no confirmation has yet been received.

The producers of a forthcoming TV series are inviting amateur radio
enthusiasts and others to take part. The show revolves around a
souped-up double decker bus which is touring cities around Britain.
Producers are looking for single people aged between 18 and 30 to take
part and are particularly keen to hear from people with any sort of
talent to show off. Described as a sort of Blind Date on a bus, you can
get more information by emailing or by calling 0207
324 0744.

Ireland's telecommunications regulator ComReg has issued a new set of
call signs for use by the Amateur Radio Emergency Network. The three
calls are EI0AC, EI0EC, and EI0NC and supersede any callsigns issued in
the past. The new calls are available for use during training and
emergency nets as directed by Ireland's National Coordinator.

Just time now for a gentle reminder that International Lighthouses and
Lightships Weekend is less than a month away. Organised by the Ayr
Amateur Radio Group, this international, non-commercial goodwill event
is now very well established and sees activity from over 400 lighthouses
in 50 countries. Now would be a good time to register on the
www.ILLW.net website, where you can find full information about the 2010
event.

Now the contest news

As previously noted, this weekend is the RSGB IOTA contest from noon UTC
on Saturday 24th until the same time on Sunday 25th July.

On 27 July it's the 50MHz UKAC from 1900 to 2130 UTC. All modes can be
used on the 6m band and the exchange is RST, serial number and locator.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 12th to the 18th
of July, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 19th of July.

Solar activity was very low to low. C class solar flares occurred on the
13th, 14th and the 17th. Solar flux levels declined from 80 units on the
12th to 76 by the 15th. Levels then increased again back to 79 units.
The average was 78. The 90 day solar flux average on the 18th was 74
units, that's one unit down on last week. X-ray flux levels varied
little day to day and averaged A9.3 units. Geomagnetic activity started
at quiet levels but on the 14th and the 15th a small coronal hole
disturbance took place. The Ap index for both days were 11 and 10 units
respectively. The average was Ap 5 units. Solar wind data from the ACE
spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increased from 290 kilometres per
second on the 14th to 500 by the 15th. However, by the end of the period
had declined back to 290 kilometres per second. Particle densities were
low throughout except for a brief increase to 16 particles per cubic
centimetre during the 14th. Bz varied between minus and plus 16
nanoTeslas on the 14th for a short time just after the disturbance
arrived. On the quieter days Bz varied between minus and plus 2
nanoTeslas, for example on the 17th and the 18th.

And now the solar forecast. This week the quiet side of the Sun is
expected to be looking our way. Solar activity should be at very low
levels. Solar flux levels are expected to be in the low 70's for most of
the week. Geomagnetic activity for the next few days could be unsettled
due to a recurring coronal hole. Activity is then expected to return to
quiet levels from midweek. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes
should be around 18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the north. Paths this
week to the Middle East should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50
per cent success rate of around 20MHz. The optimum working frequency
with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 15MHz. The best time to
try this path will be between 1200 and 1900 hours UTC. Sporadic-E is
expected to take place most days during the coming week. The Middle East
could occasionally be possible to work on 50MHz via double hop
sporadic-E.

And that's all for this week from the propagation team.
