Default Manual ECSS tuning with Drake R8A

Any one have any experience using manual ECSS tuning on a Drake R8A
instead of the synch detector? How does this also compare to using the
selectable sideband synch detector on the Drake R8B? Is there any
difference between either of the 2 methods in reception and audio
quality?

ECSS can not hold a candle to sideband selectable sync.

The R8(A,B) is stable enough for ECSS but the 10-Hz tuning interval is
not really small enough for listening to music in that mode. The R-75
receiver is better for ECSS than the Drakes. However the sync' detector
on the R8B is superb, so you don't need to use ECSS on that model. Music
sounds much better with the sync' on the R8B than ECSS on any receiver.

Using the synch detectors results in phase lock with the carrier, so
the carrier is re-inserted in phase with the side band(s). Using
manual tuning with the BFO and product detector does not phase lock
the injected the carrier with the original carrier, resulting in
Unavoidable phase distortion of the audio (you get lower 'quality'
audio".

"Quality" is subjective. The R75 has excellent intelligibility when in
ECSS mode and music is not objectionably chipmunked-up or anything.
