The British ARDF Championships were held over the Spring Bank Holiday
weekend as part of a three day International Festival of ARDF and
attracted visitors from Germany, China and Kazakhstan.


RSGB president Angus Annan visited on the second day. In spite of poor
weather, the participants set out with determination to find their
allotted hidden transmitters which had been placed in Bucknell Woods,
Shropshire. Angus presented the new 3.5 MHz ARDF trophy to Michael
Dunbar, RS195082, whose time on the M40 course was the fastest of the
day for the host country participants.


This year marks the centennial of those first sparks generated from
Marconi's historic Clifden station. To commemorate this event W8HC has
announced a special amateur radio operation from both locations
central
to Marconi's fame and success as a pioneer in wireless technology.


Ballycastle-Rathlin was his first wireless telegraph station and the
Clifden station was his last, ceasing operation in 1922. In 1907,
Guglielmo Marconi's dream of fixed point-to-point wireless telegraph
stations linking North America and Europe became a reality. Derrygimla
near Clifden, County Galway served as the site of his wireless
station.
Over the next 15 years, spark-induced blue flashes generated by the
station's massive 20 kV generators sent tens of thousands of wireless
messages across the Atlantic, linking to its North American
counterpart
at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.


On August 4 and 5 Hal W8HC will operate from Ballycastle as GI/W8HC/p.
He will also be taking part in the annual Marconi Festival at
Ballycastle with the Marconi Radio Group's MNO/MRG special event
station on 5 and 6 of August, he will ferry over to Rathlin Island
(EU-122) and operate from East Lighthouse (ARLS designator NTI 011).
He
will arrive in Clifden on 8 August where he will operate as EI/W8HC/p
at the Derrygimla site on 9 and 10 August. It is hoped that some
operating time can also occur from nearby Letterfrack, site of an
ancillary receive station built in 1912 to allow for full duplex
operation of the transatlantic signals.


All QSOs will be confirmed via Log of The World and special QSLs from
each of these historic Marconi locations will be printed and sent via
GlobalQSL www.globalqsl.com. In addition, a specially designed
certificate will be issued to those stations making contact with both
GI and EI operations from either Ballycastle or Rathlin and Derrygimla
or Letterfrack.


Foyle and District Local Amateur Radio Club recently linked up with an
amateur radio group in the Newfoundland on the 75th anniversary of
aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart's solo Atlantic crossing. She took off
from Harbour Grace airfield en route to Paris and despite a gruelling
passage and storms she landed safely in Gallagher's field at
Ballyarnett on 21 May 1932.


A live link up was set up on 20 to 21 May with their counterparts in
Newfoundland where the epic flight began. The amateur radio group in
Conception Bay and Harbour Grace added a further historic dimension to
the event as they transmitted on vintage radio equipment from their
local museum. Civic dignitaries, including the Mayor of Habour Grace,
sent good wishes to the people of Derry.


2 On 24 July to 8 August both the 21st World Scout Jamboree in
Chelmsford in the United Kingdom and Brownsea Island will be on the
air
with their own fully equipped amateur radio stations. Both will offer
a
radio programme to the participating Scouts. The stations are operated
by an international team of Scout radio amateurs.


During the Sunrise Ceremony on 1 August, GB100J will have a central
role in connecting the world together. It will be part of the Sunrise
Network.


The staff at GB100J offer a full radio-scouting set of activities to
all Jamboree participants. The station is located at the Central Plaza
of the camp site and will be active on all HF bands. Arrangements are
being made for a contact with the International Space Station on one
of
its passes over the Jamboree.


Following the resignation of Bill Mahoney, G3TZM, after 21 years
service to the Repeater Management Committee, a new committee member
is
sought for the West Midlands Area. The Chairman and Members of the RMC
would wish to place on record their sincere thanks to Bill for his
long
and loyal service to the repeater community and wish him all the very
best for the future.


Duties of committee members include dealing with all repeater issues
in
their area, advising on feasibility and vetting of proposals, liaison
with local repeater groups, representing the RMC at rallies and
attendance at RMC meetings.

Falkland Remembrance Weekend takes place next weekend 16/17th June,
marking its 25th anniversary. The Firepower Museum, located in the
former Royal Arsenal site at Woolwich will be holding a special
display
over the weekend, including visits from vehicles similar to those
involved.


GB2FR will be operated on HF and VHF by the Museum Station, by members
of the museum club station from 10am on Saturday 16th until 4pm on
Sunday 17th. QSL Cards and certificates will also be available for
working this unique special event call.


Visitors are most welcome on site and will be extended the courtesy of
the microphone if they bring their identification with them. There is
a

sign that will be active until 18 June to commemorate 25 years since
the end of the Falklands conflict. Up to four independent stations
working from the Wyke Regis Amateur Radio Training Centre. They will

using Morse, SSB, digital modes, RTTY SSTV & UI-View, and there will
also

GB1EPC will be active until 28 June to celebrate the European PSK Club
1st birthday. EPC number is EPC#2000. The station will be setup at
Bridge Street in Glasgow. Anyone is welcome to operate at the station

On the 10 June several members of the Marcon section of ARI in Italy
will join the operations relevant to the Museum Ships Weekend 2007, in
coordination with A.R.M.I. (Italian Mariners Radioamateurs
Association). This weekend will see the simultaneous activation of
many
military and commercial ships around the world.


The Bolsover Amateur Radio Society will be operating as GB2PF on
Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 August to commemorate the birthday of local
man Peter Fidler, who was a famous surveyor in Canada in the 1790s.
The
club intends to operate as many bands as possible, HF, VHF and UHF,
from the new club shack located at the Coalite Sports and Social Club,
Moor Lane, Bolsover.

Isido, I1XOI, Piera, IK1AIF, Mario, IW1PZC, Giovanni, IZ1DFG, Giorgio,
IZ1HGP, Mauro, IW2KVT, Giuseppe, I2AZ and possibily Emanuele, IW2NOD
will be active as IG9/homecall from Lampedusa Island (AF-019, IIA
AG-001) on 9 to 19 June. They plan to operate SSB and CW on the HF
bands plus 6 and 2 metres. QSL via home calls, direct or bureau. In
June and July 1944 the BBC war correspondents used the tower of the
chateau at Creully as a radio studio, from where the first reports of
the Battle of Normandy were broadcasted. Look for special callsign

Six operators from the Flying Dutch DX Group will be active as
HB0/PA0ABM from Triesenberg, Liechtenstein on 15 to 22 June. They will
operate on 160 to 10 metres CW, SSB and some digital modes with two

White Tower DX Team's operation from Skyros Island (EU-060) is
expected
to take place on 16 to 22 June. Nine operators SV0XAW, SV2FPU, SV2HNZ,
SV2HOB, SV2HPP, SV2HPY, SV2HRT, SV2HSV and SV2GNQ will be active as
SY8WT with six stations, five amplifiers and a wide range of beams,

as RV3ATS/p from 16 mountains located in various different Russian

Special event station TM2RHC, which stands for 2nd Regiment
Helicoptere
Combat, will be active on 10 to 24 June before and during an air show

ARI Versilia will activate special event station II5MD on 11 to 13
June
for the Meucci Day. Antonio Meucci was recognized as the first
inventor
of the telephone by the United States Congress in its resolution 269

Celebrating the 750th anniversary of Krakow's city rights is HF750C,
which will be active until 30 June. QSL via SP9BRP. Expect also a
large
number of local operators to use special prefix SN0 during the year.


Now the contest news The RGSB 80m Club Championships takes place
between 1900 to 2030 on 13 June on the 3.5MHz band, CW. The exchange
takes the form of RST and serial number. The All Asian Contest takes
place from 0000 on 16 June to 2359 on 17 June on the 1.8 to 28MHz
bands, CW. The exchange takes the form of RST and Age. The RSGB 432MHz
activity takes place between 2000 to 2230 on 12 June on 70cm, all
modes. The exchange takes the form of RST, serial number and locator.
The RSGB 50MHz Trophy Contest takes place between 1400 on 16 June to
1400 on 17 June on 6m, all modes. The exchange takes the form of RST,
serial number and locator. The RSGB 50MHz Backpackers takes place
between 1100 to 1500 on 6m, all modes. The exchange takes the form of
RST, serial number and locator. Now the solar factual data for the
period from 28 May to the 3 June compiled by Martin Harrison, G3USF.
After weeks with low or very low solar activity, a big new sunspot
that
appeared on the 1st quickly brought the largest batch of flares this
year, with 7 M-class and 4-C-class flares on the 2nd and 3rd,
triggering several sudden ionospheric disturbances that affected the
low bands. The solar flux increased from 67 to 87, with the weekly
average rising from 70 to 76. However, the 90-day average remained at
73. X-ray flux levels were initially minimal but surged to B1.0 on the
1st. Geomagnetic levels were in single figures every day except the
3rd, when a high-speed coronal stream resulted in an Ap figure of 10.
The average was a lowly 6 units. Solar wind speeds ranged between
277km/sec on the 31st and 531km/sec on the 3rd. Particle densities
were
mostly low but reached 31 per cubic centimetre on the 2nd, when the
interplanetary magnetic field showed its maximum variation of plus 10
and minus 5 nanoTeslas. HF propagation was variable, with some
disappointing days but others with good openings to Asia and the
Pacific and evening propagation to South and North America and Japan.
Thanks to the low geomagnetic field transpolar paths were more
reliable. Sporadic-E was reported every day at 28 and 50MHz, with
occasional 4-metre openings on 4 metres and at least one on 2 metres
to
Spain and Italy.


5 And finally the forecast. That big sunspot will still be making
itself felt, though it will have passed the central meridian. It seems
set to sustain the solar flux in the 80s for most of the week, though
the level may dip into the 70s towards the weekend. Geomagnetic levels
will be variable. There is a possibility of flare-induced disturbances
over the next few days and a recurring coronal hole will bring higher
geomagnetic levels around the 14th or 15th. MUFs at equal latitudes
will reach 18MHz in southern Britain and 15MHz in the north on the
quieter days, but will be a couple of MHz lower during disturbed
periods. Darkness hour lows should be about 10MHz. Paths to South
America will have a maximum usable frequency around 23MHz; but 24 and
28MHz openings will be possible on the better days. The optimum
working
frequency, giving a 90 per cent chance of a contact, will be about 18
MHz. The best time will be between 2000 and midnight UTC. Expect 28
and
50MHz sporadic-E on a daily basis, with openings at 70MHz on several
days. A vigilant watch on 144MHz may catch brief, intense openings
there, mainly through bearings from east to south. And that's all from
the propagation team for another week.
