They can certainly tell the difference between AM and FM. That is why
nearly nobody under 50 or 55 listens to AM.

Doubtful. How do you know the 30-somethings aren't merely avoiding your
surveyors at the mall or on street corners. Maybe people who listen to
AM radio don't go to the mall.
