Outbacker plus spring?
 

I am mounting an Outbacker on the rear hatch (side) of my Grand
Cherokee using the Diamond K400 trunk lip mount. I have a Hustler
spring I was going to us on it, but wonder what opinions are about how
necessary that is?

Bob,

If you can avoid it, I would advise against it. One thing,
they allow the antenna to flop around in the breeze and
SWR varies wildly reducing your antenna's overall effec-
tiveness. And, next, springs *can* cause mysterious
noise in your receiver, particularly as the wire braid deteriorates. Unless
you *really* gotta have the spring,
I would leave it off.

The Outbacker was originally marketed as a mobile antenna that would
survive a beating in the Outback of Australia. It is not a particularly
good peformer as an antenna (they normally test somewhere below a hustler),
but they will survive and function. Adding a spring will only cause you
tuning problems...

I've got a spring on my home brew job thats mounted on the bullbar but
it travels many 1000's of K's on rough dirt roads. It's not a bad idea to
dampen the vibration.

Have you ever watched on a meter what the SWR does while your antenna swings
and sways with Sammy Kaye; it goes thru the roof! Yes, there are a few
instances where a spring is a must, but if I can avoid using one, I do.
