I would carry it by hand. It's not worth going to a lot of
trouble for just one bit. Perhaps you could send it using a
flashlight if there is someone at the other end to see it.
Of course if you have do send one bit on a number of occasions
some other means may be required.

The above is intended to show you that more information is
required before we can answer your question. That's my
two bits worth.

Even a 'computer science student' should have thought of using a
postcard. Less cost than First Class Mail -- even if "cost is not an
issue." Just write a BIG "1" or "0" for the appropriate 'bit' on the
card and send it off.

Of course, you could always encrypt it -- if necessary.

Then, you might use rifle shots. One equals "bit". Two equal "no-bit".

I suppose "place A" could always telephone "place B", and inform them of
the state of the bit.

Of course, it usually requires more 'bits' to complete a homework
assignment.

never underestimate the bandwidth of an undergrad with a shopping cart!
that was true when i was in school and the cart was full of 9 track tape
reels, and even more so today if you fill it up with dvd's or hard drives.

p.s. for one 'bit' of data over 2km with no delivery deadline i would
suggest smoke signals or pigeon... but would probably get in trouble with
either the epa or pita for doing it.. so stick with the undergrad.

Sound from an air horn will carry that far. It would help to
know more about the application.
