Splitting the Signal

Hi....Im new to ham Radio and have an all-band discone on my roof that
I use for my scanner. I also will use this antenna to transmit with my
ham radio. So far, it works OK for the transmissions.
Lead in line is 50ft of LMR-400 with 'N' connectors. My question is,
Can I split the line for 2 locations? I like to listen to my scanner
in my back yard and transmit with the Radio but I also would like to
have a line indoors when the weather isnt great. Can I add a splitter
and run a new line indoors ?
Or, should I have a dedicated line to run inside? Thank You for any
responses....Mike

Splitting the Signal

It would be very difficult to use a simple splitter that would have
enough isolation to keep the transmitter's power out of the scanner, if
they were both connected at the same time. You need some sort of
switch in there. An alternative is to simply use two separate
antennas, physically separated by at least a few feet so the receiver
doesn't get hit with too much RF power. The separation you need
depends on the receiver and the power you're transmitting. Err on the
side of "more than enough" separation.

You could make an automatic switch, but making one fast enough and
protecting the receiver well enough is a challenge I wouldn't recommend
for someone new to this stuff. Better to just connect the antenna to
the unit you're using at any one time, if you're only going to have one
antenna.

Cheers,
Tom
