"Combiner" For Two Antennas Into A Radio Single Input ?

Hello:

I do a lot of listening with a Uniden scanner on pretty much all of the
scanner freq's, from perhaps
25 MHz up to 956 MHz, or so. These are of course FM and AM.

Have two antennas: One a R/S Discone, and the other a Scantenna.
The Discone is presently hooked up to a sw set that also has capabilities in
the scanner freq. range.

Was wondering, about this, as I saw a very brief mention in a maghazine
about using "Combiners"
to combine the outputs (capabilities) of two antennas into a single radio's
input.

Is this possible, and is there anything to be gained ?
What about phase differences, etc. ?

Can't imagine that it works to improve things, but really don't know.
The article was, unfortunately, more of a mention that it is done, rather
than any technical details.

So, what would happen if I "combined" my Scantenna and R/S Discone into my
scanner's input ?

Thanks,
Bob
