Looked up an article on google called Four square antenna experiences
and to my amazement I found that one of Roy's close friends had claimed on his behalf that the four square antenna can be attributed to him. I waited a while for what Roy had to say because certainly was an achievement, if true. Roy did not deny or enlargen on the achievement so I started to dig for myself. The above article was the first I came across and it precedes Roys article in the antenna compendium by some thirty years. As expected Roy still remains silent taking things on the chin in his normal shy way.How many other things did he invent before the government released antenna computor programs to the public and yet still stayed quiet? Is there still a chance for a Nobel prize for other achievements not declared?. Art |

I'm sure glad I don't feel it nessesary to worry about what other people do, did, or will do. That's no way to live. Will land you in the rubber room after a while. I don't think Roy has ever claimed to invent the antenna. If I'm not mistaken, his work was more in the proper phasing of the elements. Would this bother you in some way? MK |

Art I'm running around like a three peckered lizard.. I've been constantly dealing with medical people, as my mother has had two strokes, and has been in a nursing facility. Just this week I had to fire her HMO, and get her back on regular medicare.. What a farce... This was in order to get her back in the hospital for a needed checkout. Finally got her in yesterday. I've got to run to her nursing home to pick up clothes, and then take them over to the hospital. Then I've got to see if the people that just sold me a car have my license plates yet. I bet they flake out, and make me wait til monday.. They expire 12 am monday morning. I have to drive to Oklahoma tonight to look at two properties. I'll be leaving about 10 pm tonight, drive to Eufaula OK, which I'll get there about 6 am. Look at that property which is near the lake. Then I've got to leave there, and drive to just south of Paris TX, and look at another property there. Then drive back home.. I won't be sleeping again until tomorrow night.. Then I gotta decide which of the two properties I want.. I'm trading 10 acres I just bought for one of those two most likely.. They are both 5 acres, but better roads, quality, etc.. I'm kinda leaning to the one on the lake, but will see... It would be nice to be able to walk to the lake from the property.. I'll have an easement to the lake too.. Needless to say, antenna chitter chatter is kinda low on my priorities right now.. Well, gotta go water myself down in the de-smell chamber, and hit the trail.. No radio chatter in that car...It's a fairly new corolla, and it's so purty I'm having trouble bringing myself to drill holes in it. That thing sips the gas.. Just what I need for these quicky 900 mile road trips.. MK |

I've never claimed credit for the four square antenna, and no one makes
claims on my behalf. If anyone, friend or not, is claiming that I am the originator of the four square antenna, he is in error. As often the case, I have no idea where Art got his information, but if he will give the name of this individual and where the alleged misinformation appears, I'll contact him and tell him the true story of the origin of the four square, which is as follows. To my knowledge, its first creator was Dana Atchley, W1CF (now SK), in association with others. He was certainly the first to give it that name. Its introduction to the amateur community was "360 degree - Steerable Vertical Phased Arrays", by Dana W. Atchley, Jr., W1CF, Harold E. Stinehelfer, ex-W2ZRS, and Joseph F. White, PhD, in April 1976 _QST_. Certain aspects of the antenna were patented in U.S. Patent 4,123,759 (Hines et al), but no restriction was ever imposed or enforced on the use of the patented material to my knowledge. The article and patent promoted the use of Wilkinson power dividers to supply power to the elements, a method I knew which wouldn't produce the claimed results. This resulted in my writing a long paper on phased array theory which I sent to anyone who requested it at for the cost of duplication and postage. Dana got one of these, and saw the error of using the Wilkinson feed. The paper ended up being published as a major part of Chapter 8 of the _ARRL Antenna Book_, where it's been for many years. You'll find the _QST_ article by Atchley et al referenced at the end of the chapter. Anyone who has EZNEC, including the demo, of version 3.0 or later (when the Antenna Notes feature was added), is invited to open the 4square.ez example file furnished with the program. Once opened, click File, then Edit Antenna Notes. This will open the Antenna Notes file for the 4 square example antenna. The first sentence is "This popular phased array was invented by Dany Atchley, W1CF."
