Smith Chart program

I'm looking for a Windows-based program that runs on a local machine rather than remotely as at a web site. Somebody tell Roy that Robert Lay, W9DMK, has a SMARTSMITH program that may or may not be what he is looking for and may or may not be EZNEC compatible. http://www.qsl.net/w9dmk/ -- 73, Cecil http://www.w5dxp.com |

I'd appreciate any recommendations for an inexpensive Smith chart based program which can be used for the design of basic matching networks and the like. I'm looking for something along the line of MicroSmith or WinSMITH, neither of which is any longer available. Thanks, Roy Lewallen, W7EL Roy Here is the URL for WinSMITH from Sci Tech Publishing at $125 their price. Dave Foreman http://www.scitechpub.com/WinSmith.htm winSMITH 2.0 automates the graphical solution of transmission line and lumped element matching networks. It is also an excellent training aid for RF and microwave circuit design. The power of the Smith chart is the ability to present complex data visually, making possible informed judgments regarding transmission line systems, measured data, antennas, matching and other networks. winSMITH simplifies the process by replacing the paper chart, a pencil, compass (and eraser!) with computerized screen graphics. It offers the speed, accuracy, and repeatability provided by the personal computer and instantaneous data readout in multiple formats. This program is for Windows 98 and XP. |

Thanks, everyone, for the info. I'm surprised and glad to see that
WinSMITH is available again. It was offered first by its publisher, Noble, then later by the ARRL. I'm quite sure there was a period after the ARRL dropped it when it wasn't available. There are some things about it I and others don't like, particularly the 15 step limit to imported impedance data. But EZNEC currently writes files compatible with the "current" (1998) version of WinSMITH. It's apparent, though, that it won't be updated, so it's a good idea to locate a substitute anyway. I've downloaded the Swiss program and will look over the others you've been kind enough to recommend. Thanks again. Roy Lewallen, W7EL |

Try QUCS: http://qucs.sourceforge.net/ I have used it to help in the design of RF matching circuits. It accepts S-parameter model input, and depicts sim results on a Smith chart. ups.com... Additional comment: if you write impedance files in standard network analyzer format, they can be used by a lot of programs. Good idea Tom. Roy: Besides RFSim99, Agilent's free AppCAD program has a mode where it can overlay a set of data on a Smith chart, having read it from the Touchstone ("standard network analyzer format") files. |
