If you really want a more in-depth understanding (beyond the
technical/hobby level), and are not an EE by profession, I would suggest
auditing an undergrad EE course on the subject.

:-) Peter has a Ph.D. degree in EE. Here's a quote from his
QRZ.com bio: "I have written two theses, some 35+ professional
technical papers, several US Patents and Patent applications,
and co-authored a graduate EE textbook."

Hello, and perhaps I was viewing Dr. Brackett's questions/comments
incorrectly. Maybe he already knows the answers to the (rhetorical?)
statements posited. EE covers many related disciplines these days so I am
assuming that if Dr. Brackett hasn't specialized in
electromagnetics/electrophysics that he still retains some basic info from
those undergrad "fields" courses. In any event it was not my intent to
offend Dr. Brackett or anyone else. Sincerely,

Hi John,

The only offense would have not been contributing to the nonsense.
(Now I've done it even though I like these dalliances. Stand by for
the wounded cry.)

Cecil:

What "great doctorates" are you aware of which have made major
discoveries and new advancements?

Most, if not all, I am aware of only follow behind men such as edison,
einstein, tesla, marconi, de forest, etc, etc and write books and papers ...

JS

Well, demonstrating how unaware you are is just a side effect, you
apparently missed the whole point ...

Hello, and while categorizing discoveries and advancements as "major"
are in the hands of the beholder why hasn't anyone mentioned Dr. John D.
Kraus, W8JK (silent key), antenna and radiotelescope designer
extraordinaire? Both the EE and ham community lost a great radio
pioneer. Sincerely,

"Discovering radio" (Nicola Tesla) is major ...
Inventing the light bulb (Edison) is major ...
The discovery of fire (caveman) is major ...
The first spacecraft (nasa) is major ...
The first turbine (Nicola Tesla) is major ...
The first atomic bomb (various scientists) is major ...
The egypt pyramids (unknown?) are major ...
The first transistor (bell labs) is major ...

Naa, categorizing is easy! Like I said, "great doctorates" are mostly
oxymoron-ish ... and belong "in the other category."
