noise antenna?
 

hi

about 6months ago my normally low noise level has been plagued with
some noise

it's on and off about 30sec to 1 min on and maybe 1min off but then
it seems to take a break and might go quite for say 5 min

seems to be on all the bands 160-10 and almost as strong equally

it sounds just like the noise level(norm background static sorta)
but comes in s7 solid so all but the most strongest stations get
wipped out


i turned off all the power in my apt via the main breaker and powered
up the rig w/my battery so w/only the rig w/power i still got it same

noise definately comes in stronger w/my roof dipole than say a small
vertical whip in the apt (i am on 4th fl of 13)

i barly hear the noise w/my indoor whip however i also barley hear any
singnals inside given all the concreate and steel mesh

so the question:

Obviously i need to hunt around for the noise whats the best way to
track this down unf i don't have a spectrum analyzer

i do have a ft817 but what is the best antenna but make for this? i
can't walk around the block w/anything to big

but am willing to get anything i need as long as it's not too$$

any tips appreciated because i can't realy use the lowbands anymore
really annoying

the simplest thing is just a loop. maybe a foot or so in diameter, a couple
turns is enough... just enough so that you can hear it and get a null off
the side that you can hear or see on the meter.

Could be a heating pad. I once had a problem like that back in the days
when The Public Service Company Of Colorado was relly helpful on those
matters. (Now they're no longer The Public Service Company Of Colorado,
and, they are no longer helpful. sigh...)

I had alreay eliminated my house as the source. The feller that came
out from PSCo. found a heating pad being used for a doogie bed (24/7) in
the house across the alley from me. The bi-metal control was carbon'ed
up and arcing in use. The control was also STUFFED UNDER THE DOG'S
BLANKET!!!, and the blanket was starting to char!

Sounds like what my coffee pot was doing. I noticed every time I sat down to
listen it would start, rest of the day fine. I always start a listening
session with a fresh cup o coffee.

See if the noise is present on a portable AM broadcast-band radio, if
you tune the radio between stations. If so, you'll probably find that
it's fairly directional - the loopstick antenna in a portable radio
has reasonably deep nulls - and you can take bearings.

MFJ sells a noise-hunting receiver, which uses a pair of telescoping
whip antennas, and (if I recall correctly) an AM receiver tuned to the
aircraft band at around 130 MHz.

The first thing to do is determine whether the noise source is within
your house or not. Easiest way to do this is to run your radio from a
battery, and turn off the house's main circuit breaker. If the noise
goes away, the source is local... if not, it's outside the house.

What you're describing certainly sounds like the result of an
electrical arc or switching of some sort. Some household devices
which have been shown to cause this sort of intermittent noise have
been things like electric-fence energizing systems, 12- and 24-volt
battery chargers (solar or line-powered), fish-tank heaters, and even
electric blankets.

Industrial systems like electrical welders can do it, too.

Another not-uncommon source is street lighting systems. Sodium- and
mercury-vapor high intensity light systems can generate a lot of
noise, especially if there are loose or corroded connections in their
wiring or (I believe) if the bulbs are failing and the lights are
cycling on and off. If you can track the noise with a portable AM
radio, see if you can find a street or parking-lot lamp which is
cycling on and off in synchronization with the noise.

My noise sniffer is my T90a. I can tune it on AM to any part of the HF
spectrum and if it's close enough to the source of the problem, I can
spot it. And taking the rubber duck down to the 2m/70cm size will
attenuate it even more so I can get a closer fix. Taking the antenna off
altogether gives real close-up detection. And it's not all that
obtrusive, being a handheld.

But good luck getting anyone to do anything about the noise once you find
it. What does work for me (I'm in an urban apartment setting, too, with
commercial properties right outside my window) is my MFJ-1026. It won't
kill all noises but it really does a good job on those that exhibit some
directivity. You can use the supplied telescopic whip with it or put an
external noise antenna on it.
