Isn't half the fun of HF using ones brain as an organic processor to
pull words out of noisy signals? grin

Seriously I always wondered why something like PSKnn became so popular
when with a bit more code writing on your average PC might have yielded
a viable digital voice circuit. Maybe your average ham doesn't want to
say much, only caring to exchange RST's for a card! This is actually
what deters me from PSK31, most seem to only want a limited contact..

Does anyone know of a sound card/PC system that does digital voice over
SSB bandwidths? I note the comment about group delay and other problems
using amatuer transceiver equipment. Could not your rigs characteristics
be mapped by a "known" station to reduce this problem.

Since we are on the topic, has anyone used PSK31 mobile/moving? Are
there phase shift issues to be allowed for due to the physical movement
of the station. Probably more of an issue on VHF than HF.. Looking to do
some slow PSK/GPS stuff from the car..

I disagree. I have run into a large number of PSKrs who have no trouble
ragchewing. Often with an extensive set of preset keyboard macros.... :/

I had a several-minutes QSO on PSK31 and the OM actually thanked me for
_not_ being a "Drive-by QSO." So, the people who are just filling lines in
a logbook aren't the exclusive users.

Just my two cents.

I just ordered a digital squawk box made by AOR. I'm interested in
staying in contact with my wife's mobile when she is "on the road"
hawking the business' wares at quilt fests and the like. Granted, we use
the cellphone most of the time, but there are places in the USA that
still are not covered by such devices, or the system is so overloaded
that you are lucky to get through. (this is my excuse for spending the
money)

I like all kinds of contacts, short, long, etc. I'm not fixated on any
one type of qso.

I want to enjoy the digital technology while it is still new, at least
it is new to me. I felt the same way about RTTY, Amtor, Pactor, Pactor
II and PSK 31 (I haven't used the latter yet).

Hopefully, the alleged improvement in voice communications at low power
will be just what I was looking for. I said hopefully. G

Funny you should mention that Ed.

One of my long term projects is a "where is the family car" system that
I had hoped to use a very narrow band/slow data link for GPS data as
well as short text message exchange. Thinking along the lines of super
slow QRSS/PSK31 setup on 13.56MHz. The narrow bandwidth and low power
would I hope cover much of the country but I'll admit I haven't done the
maths on it.

I have seen a PSK63 system that does HF mail type exchanges. Kind of
slow but very do-able. Just a HF rig and laptop/PC at both locations and
you can stay in touch! When the sigs are real good of course you can use
plain old SSB!

Wow, my experience has been different. Aside from the obvious short DX
contact, I've spent a lot of time with pretty verbose people on psk31.

I recall one 3+ hour contact on 80 meters. Were my fingers tired!

A person should be able to come up with a multiple PSK31 signal method
of sending hfemail. Maybe even PSK63. I wouldn't want to send much
faster than that for BW/SNR reasons.

It's certainly possible, but there's a fundamental problem.. the people
who know how to do it are interested in other things. There are a
variety of digital voice modems available (e.g. the AOR box), but the
algorithms are either uninteresting to a would-be experimenter or are
bound in some form of intellectual property protection (e.g. one could
graft a LPC10E vocoder at 2.4 kbps into Pactor3, but why?)

I know some people have tinkered with something like this for a form of
HF APRS.. a bit of googling might turn up something.
