Recommendation sought: Handheld transceiver for 2 meters (& maybe 70 cm)
 

I'm looking to purchase one new. Have looked over the ones available
at Universal, especially the Icom and Kenwood models, but would like
to hear from folks who have experience with them (or others). Will
consider a dual bander as well. Decent audio would be nice!

I have two dual banders, Yeasu FT60 and Kenwood D7A. I like the Kenwood best.
Has built in TNC but is a little pricey. Capable of APRS which is why I like it.

Is the APRS the only reason you prefer the Kenwood to the Yaesu, or

My first radio was a Yaesu FT8800 mobile. It was necesarry to return it for
service twice in the first 3 months of use. This sort of turned me off on
Yaesu. I replaced the 8800 with a Kenwood TMD700. My base is a Kenwood TS2000
which I like very much. I then bought the Kenwood D7A to replace the Yaesu
handheld. All three Kenwoods have built TNC, and have similar menu structures
for ease of programming and work well with one another for APRS and packet. The
Kenwood mobile is easier to read the display. I am interested in "packet" radio
and the newly developing AVRS combining APRS and IRLP. My Kenwoods should be
good in these areas.

Mild rant: The mfrs are into planned obsolescence, especially on 2 mtr
HTs. Unless you are an aficionado of Star-D or other exotic stuff, what
do you really need besides digital tuning, PL, and a dozen or so memory
channels? Of course, my opinion will offend the Ones who must be the
"First Kid on the Block" to have the latest fad item.
Anyway, I really like my Yaesu VX-5, which is available used at
reasonable price. It's a 5-watt tri-bander (6,2,70cm)which is software
programmable. I was really excited when I bought it, but now find that
for my use, it is secondary to a good 50-60 watt mobile when traveling
away from the local repeaters. An old Yaesu FT-1500M serves for 2 mtrs.
