I hate to totally block people who arguably have some useful things to post
to the newsgroup. But the content on the thread about travelling waves versus standing waves has become so dominated by one person that there is no way to end it except by filtering all messages to rec.radio.amateur.antennas to eliminate the dominant poster. So I have not only blocked articles from his web site, I am blocking any article which contains his name. So if you reply to him, I am sorry but I will not be able to see your remarks. I know that no one is likely to lose any sleep about my actions. From now on, I hope there will be articles about antenna construction and modelling because that will probably be all that I am able to read. 73. Ken Fowler, KO6NO |

Ken Fowler, KO6NO Hello Ken, From your comment, it appears that you are seeing all new posts to the group in chronological order. That can be very frustrating. You may not be aware that most newsreaders will sort messages by thread if so instructed. That way an entire thread consisting of even thousands of posts will appear in your newsreader as a single header (unexpanded). There are usually no more than a few new threads per day on the newsgroup so you can choose which threads you want to follow without seeing any posts to the threads that don't interest you. Sort of like scanning the headlines. When you see a thread of interest, you can expand it and see the headers of all the posts in that thread. You can't control which threads are posted to the newsgroup, but you can make it easier to read only those that interest you. 73, Chuck NT3G ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

I find that even before I read a new troll posting, it is _easily_ identifiable by both Subject: content and poster id. I mark it for killing (by Subject:) for nn days and never have to encounter anything in that thread again. Some logic if the poster is killfiled here and I don't see the Subject: until the first followup to the troll. Sigh. It appears that his source is http://www.giganews.com which is web based. They probably have options for sorting by date, thread etc. I think you are correct. He should structure his viewing on giganews in such as a way as to only view the threads of interest. He does noy use a normal 'newsreader' like most usenet vets are using. For what it's worth, I use NewsRover to read news. GigaNews is only the source. I' not sure what is a "normal newsreader". *nix people have their favorites and google news people have no contro. I know how to use Outlook but NewsRover gives me much more control. I can filter on header content or message content in a variety of Boolean ways. I can also block senders if the sender doesn't fake his post address. If you don't know the capabilities of News Rover you can check it out on SandH.com. It is as perfect at retrieving threads as a newsreader can be. And yes, I can kill threads by subject if the authors don't keep messing around with the Subject. In this case, the newsgroup was so dominated by a single poster that blocking made more sense to me. So yes, I am structuring my viewing so as to only see the threads of interest. Now back to discussions about antennas. 73 and Happy New Year. Ken |

Mine is Agent, so I can answer for it. I used the free version a dozen years ago, and bought the commercial version right away. It allows for "regular expressions" in filters. With very few of them, they wipe out a lot of trash. Of course, you have to be a *nix wizard to know how to craft "regular expressions" but it also has simpler rule structures that can cover a lot of ground too. 73's Richard Clark, KB7QHC |

Can you do the same for the M15 spammer as well.

Art, I suspect the problem with MI5 is the drastic reduction in funding due to the end of the cold war. One would think with the guy going to Canada and Florida the MI6 could step in and make a good hit without the assistance of the CIA. The CIA today is rather useless, not being able to even estimate Iranian WMD capability much less using electromagnetism to effect mind control :-) More seriously, my theory is that this MI5 is a prank that started at the psychology department of some UK university and the students carry it on as a tradition year after year. They seem very adept at making themselves unflilterable. If MI5 could only stop him from coming back they would have 100% of my support ;-) I don't think it is organised, just a couple of wierdos. You have the one guy who lives in South London and then the other wierdo who lives way up North of Chicago. Actually they are so wierd that they don't even communicate with each other. Neither of the them work because of mental disability which is not a bad thing as when they are caught they can be put in a looney bin for a long while. Eventually somebody who lives nearby will pay them a little visit and present them with a parcel or something. Fortunately their posts are easily recognisable so one can move on. If the fphantom wave thing goes on much longer I may have to communicate with both of these wierdoos for a change in pace! Art |
