Yeah,
Bought a new GM sedan last June and its hasn't got an external antenna, the
rear window heater is the antenna.

What are the "kids" going to do if they can't break off your antenna? Will
they use a brick to get at the antenna embedded in the rear-window glass?

I was thinking about buying a car antenna and mounting it on the roof I
bet it will work good. My old magnet cb antenna works pretty good.

Be careful when drilling (sawing) a hole thru a vehicle roof, it is easy to
bend the metal leaving a dimple in the roof.
Have it done professionally or check with the shops that specialize in roof
antenna installations. I have heard of a Motorola tool designed for the
task.

It is unusual in an Australian made car mate, I bought a humble Holden
Commodore (from the GM stable) near the bottom of the model stack, sort of
an entry level car!
Car manufacturers get away with a lot over here, we are even the dumping
ground for any vehicle that won't sell in Japan.

An antenna embedded in the windshield, which worked well--now that would
be something!

My old buick had an active/amplified one--I would like to replace the
one of this new buick with it (and I have no idea where the antenna
is--perhaps it is the rear windows defroster!)

I had an 87 Pulsar and a 99 Windstar that both had windshield antennas.
They both worked well. Crikeys, that's over 20 years ago!

GM may have had problems, but that is likely due to something other
than inherent flaws of that type antenna.

I wonder if the writer is going to follow up with a story about
transistors replacing tubes? hehe.....
