Around the low bands so 80 and 40 it seems barely to plough through..
No sunspots or what ?
What prediction sites is relighable ?
Have you heard the event on the magnethosphere ? I have.

Conditions were outstanding for the CQWW 160 CW
contest this weekend - and for much of the
season too. I have heard several folks who
spend more time on 40 and 80 than I do say that
those bands have not enjoyed the same nice
conditions.

Few sunspots this year. http://www.hamradioresources.com/hamradio is one
possibility for a prediction site. The "Space Weather" link, second box
from the left, is relevant. See the tutorial, too.

I don't do much 160 except for local chitchat. (I'm in SoCal.)
80 has been hopping. Quite a bit of long skip, including coast-to-coast
action and Europe from the East Coast, I hear. Running power is a big help,
more so than the higher bands, I think.
40 seems to be in the doldrums.
20 has occasional good days. I heard Alaska working Alabama today. During
most days, 800 - 1200 mile paths are common for me. Lately around sunset 20
has been going off like it's being switched off, quite different from last
summer.
I don't have a decent antenna for 15.
10 might as well be on Mars lately, although some folks claim to have
enjoyed openings. Not me, not lately.

10m has its moments. A couple of weeks ago I worked Missouri and
Louisanna from NC. I heard two guys chatting and thought they were
local. Threw out my call and found they were in Slidell Ms.When I got
finished talking to them a guy in St Louis called me. He couldnt hear
the guys in MS. 10M is not dead you just have to wait for an opening.

The low bands are best during the minimums overall.
But the MUF can drop down pretty low at times.
So 80 can stretch out, and the closer stations will
drop out on you.
It will often drop out in the middle evening to closer stations,
and then come back again around midnight or so.
Fairly normal in the winter during solar minimums.
But you will notice when the band seems kaput,
you will still hear longer distance stations, and dx.
The MUF will vary to the distance between two stations.
IE: if I'm in Houston and talking to Dallas and El Paso
at the same time, and Dallas drops out, but El Paso
is still strong, that means the MUF has dropped
below my frequency for the shorter distance, but
not yet for the longer. I'd have to drop frequency to
continue to work Dallas. IE: I'd go to 160m.

There you go! I check 10m every day, especially when 20 sounds quiet,
'cause maybe everybody's up on 10. Lately the only thing I hear on 10 is a
stray carrier or two. But, as you so aptly put it: It has its moments.

I monitor 11m for activity and switch over to 10 when I hear some dx..
I ve noticed I talk into La and Ms a lot on this longwire on 10m. I
must have lobes pointing in to each area.
