I'll be attending a function at OSU in early July, and I'm looking for
some advice from local ham residents and/or hams who are very familiar with the area near Ohio State University. I'll be bringing my FT-817 along and it would be nice to find a multi-storey hotel that has balconies for each room and not be next to some horrible HF unfriendly influence. (not that cities in general are particularly good for HF, but a hotel right next to a power substation or AM radio station transmitter would not be my first choice, and a 3 storey place sandwiched between much higher office buildings would not likely be my second ![]() So, the closer to OSU the better, because it would be nice to be able to walk there each morning for to attend the lecture series, within a mile walking distance would be okay. A balcony would be nice (weather cooperating that is) for early morning / late evening QRP and would allow me to put some sort of antenna outside of the walls of the structure. I realise this might be asking for a lot, but I've never been there and as such I'm completely uninformed about the area, so I thought this might be a good place to ask "hams who know" what they would like if they were there. Thanks for reading! Bob |

Holiday Inn
328 W. Lane Avenue 800-465-4329 614-294-4848 Right across the street from the north end of campus. Don't know if they have balconies, but it is a high-rise. Where on campus is your function? There are others in the area, but this is the closest one I can recall if you are going to the north end of campus (mostly engineering and sciences). Depends on what you mean by 'walking distance', though. Practically the entire campus is 'walking distance', since it is mostly closed to vehicles (except around the periphery). The course is music teachers symposium. It's about a week long,
depending on which seminars your choose to attend. I have a synopsis of the schedule. It's in various buildings; Weigel Auditorium, Hughes Auditorium, Mershon something or other... I'm not sure if those buildings are near the Holiday Inn or not. If you're familiar with their location with respect to the hotel, I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks! Bob |

They have a virtual map you can look at. There is also list of nearby hotels, but the holiday inn I mentioned is not on it for some reason. The buildings you mentioned would be about a 10 minute walk. Jim N8EE "Bob" wrote in message .. . The course is music teachers symposium. I called the Holiday Inn, and checked them out on the web, and mapblast.
The music dept is pretty much centered around the corner of College Road and North High street. Holiday Inn looks good, and they have rooms, but no balconies. (I called them.) The front desk fellow was very helpful, but I was not about to ask "...and how difficult would it be to get an antenna outside the room window?" :-) It's still the front runner though, I'll ferret about Microsoft's "Streets and Trips" and a few other sources. Might even resort to calling the University itself, I'm sure they have a list (perhaps even online) of suggestions. Thank you for all your input and advice! Bob |

It is at http://www.osu.edu/visitors/accommodations.html but as I said, the Holiday Inn is not on it. Note that some on this list are a few miles away and will require a car. Summer quarter ain't too bad, but otherwise parking is absolutely attrocious!! Jim N8EE |
