Help Getting a PK-232 to Key a TS-570 in CW
 

Yes, I know this is an antenna newsgroup but the people who read this
traffic may be able to help me.

I have always used the PK-232 for RTTY and Packet and never really messed
with the putting it into the keyboard mode for CW transmission. For
grins I decided to try this morning and ran into all kinds of problems
and could use some help.

First the TS-570 was designed for the operator to use his personal keyer
with the 570's internal keyer. The internal keyer is activated by
plugging in a Stereo Phone plug. If you want to use and external keyer
(like a PK-232), you have to use a Mono (tip and Sleeve) Phone plug.

The PK-232 has a Plus (+) and Minus (-) RCA jacks on the rear. I cannot
find anything at Radio Shack that goes from two RCA's to one Mono Phone.
Really weird setup. I found a RCA to Mono Phone plug and and it causes
the 570 to send a stream of dits when plugged into the (+) output on the
PK-232. If I plug the same cable into the (-) RCA jack on the PK-232, it
causes the 570 to send a stream of dah's.

Looks like I may have to rig up some special non standard cable taking
the center of the (+) RCA plug to the Tip of the Phone Plug and the
center of the other (-) RCA jack to the sleeve of the Phone Plug and let
the grounds float.

Do I had to dummy down the TS-570 buy turning some menu functions off?

Anybody out their CW keying a TS-570 with a PK-232?

ps: Just made up the cable mentioned above and when I turn on the power,
the TS-570 starts sending a constant string of dit to the side tone
oscillator... like someone duck taped a Bencher.

I must be doing something pretty dumb. Page 3-6 Section 3.3.5 of the
PK-232 manual is really confusing with a totally useless Direct CW
Keying Cable diagram.

Again, anybody been able to key the TS-570D(G) using a PK-232. I need
help.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I read and referred to both
manuals before posting the request for help. Ny first reaction to your
message was to be ****ed at someone telling me to RTFM. Guess what? You
were right!!!

The problem has been found and fixed. I misunderstood the manual and
was using a Mono Phone plug in the "PADDLE" jack. On second reading (at
your suggestion) I noted the "KEY" jack uses a 3.5 mm (1/8") Mono plug.

Like I said in the posting "... I must be doing something pretty dumb."
Everything is now working absolutely perfect and I am a little red-faced.
