As the other Jeff pointed out, there's reasons to NOT use wood, but it's not because wood is bad. Purely a dimensional change problem. Although, I suspect that the original poster is thinking of strapping a 2x4 across two legs of the tower and using just enough "arm" to get the dish to clear the tower.
