DLM Antenna
The following is from the ARRL (main page www.arrl.org to get link ) Web site.
It would appear that the ARRL is promulgating the view that "History is being made". ARRL stands for: American Radio Relay League.' Relay' is an archaic term kept from the organization's founding days; this is not a wireless mesh network organization, for example. Mr. Robert Vincent is a Technical Coordinator for the ARRL. To any non-hams, I would like to point out that the ARRL is an organization comprising a minority of licensed radio amateurs in the US, and that many other highly technical radio amateurs, professional in their respective communities, do not necessarily agree with recent views so posed by that organization regarding UWB (ultrawideband); BPL (broadband over power lines) ; and the press-promulgated claims of the DLM antenna. Many antenna professional are members of the ARRL, while many are not. In my opinion, it is fitting and proper to give a voice and forum to this research effort, but ill-advised to posit it as "revolutionary" (URI press release) and "history being made"(ARRL web site) until after the findings have been presented and assessed. It is, in my opinion, more prudent for such an organization to present a neutral face in the absence of publicly available information. 73, Chip N1IR ---------------------------- "In April, I reported that our Technical Coordinator, K1DFT had been recognized by the University of RI for having invented the most outstanding intellectual property of 2003. Recently, news articles in the New York Times, EE Times and Providence Journal have recognized Rob personally and his invention in very positive reports. His invention is called a Distributed Loaded Monopole and is in process of being patented. Independent validation of Rob's hard work is being performed and he will present a mini-seminar of the exciting new antenna concept at the NE Division Convention in Boxboro, August 14-15. It will certainly be a standing room only crowd in the Cotillion Room. Don't miss it. You'll be witnessing history being made. " |
You've copy-pasted one paragraph of one of this guy's personal
comments on the K1DFT thing into something it's not in order to suit your own personal agenda(s). Hi Brian, Nice to hear from you. The ARRL NE Convention at Boxboro is planning a two hour forum for Rob Vincent's work. Perhaps you might present an example where a 'new' technical subject has been given that much focus at an ARRL sponsored event? I am of the opinion that it is proper and fitting to have this venue as a forum for Rob's work, but the time devoted would appear to indicate some sort of point of view, don't you think? Is there, for example, a separate talk by W8JI telling us why the Vincent claims are not accurate? Balance would be very nice. That is my opinion; yours may differ. Also, your point is well taken. It would thus appear that perhaps--if there IS such a strong interest from the members--that the ARRL do a short, factual, and newsy piece on their web site. Otherwise, in an ARRL sponsored event, and an ARRL sponsored web page, there is certainly a point of view so cast, don't you think, Brian? I do have a personal point of view, Brian, that is frankly, quite well informed and objective. It is not an agenda. I am not an activist. The ARRL has done many good things, and it has done others that some feel are more activist oriented, and--in my opinion-- not fostering new technologies such as UWB; cognitive radio; and of course, BPL. Hams, in recent years, have little (if any) to show in being part of the technological revolution in wireless that has occured in the last decade. It would be a shame if the DLM designs of Vincent were used (as a counterexample) in that context for PR sake by the ARRL or anyone else--if, and until, the claims are verified and the technology has been demonstrated to offer NEW and UNIQUE benefits. I speculate that we will see a full, front page article on the wonders of the DLM antenna in the QST September issue, to coincide with the Boxboro ARRL Convention. Of course, that COULD be construed as an ARRL 'agenda', Brian. And, of course, my opinions may prove to be only partially justified here, and maybe totally wrong. Who knows:-)? Brian, do you have a technical opinion on the claims of the Vincent DLM technology? I appreciate that you may wish to wait for more data. 73, Chip N1IR |
The ARRL NE Convention at Boxboro is planning a two hour forum for Rob Vincent's work. Don't see the Vincent forum listed here yet http://www.boxboro.org/2004/SatSunProgram.htm but there are 30 blocks of two hour presentations available between Saturday morning and Sunday noon in five different meeting rooms giving him less than 4% of the total available time. |
