However, the big but is that an negative NF is not possible.

I don't think both definitions mean the same thing. If the amplifier
adds *any* noise it increases the NF above zero by the conventional
definition. The only way the NF can be negative is if the amplifier
removes noise from the input, or in other words, increases the SNR.


Yes that is correct, but the definitions are also correct. The flaw in
the negative noise figure argument is that it is not possible to have a
better SNRout than SNRin *for the same system conditions*.

The apparent negative noise figure only come about by comparing the NF
of the amp in a 50ohm system with the output from a system with
something different on the input.

The test method used is also very prone to measurement errors for low
noise figures.

am email address through them (for around $3.95/mo IIRC). Don't know if
I'll go for it or not - I've had this email since it was on ibm.net but
haven't used the modem or wireless access for years (I used to use it
for wireless access at Starbucks, but they've gone free now, also).

I hate to give it up for sentimental reasons, but the only thing I get
on it is spam anyway. But I'm not going to give out my business email

Same here but I thought they'd support private email domains, not
att.biz. I decided to get my domain and email support elsewhere.
There was no advantage to use AT&T anymore. Since March, I've just
been forwarding everything from my at&t IDs to my domain. If I could
have kept my AT&T IDs, I doubt I would have bothered.
