Reflector - reception
 
Hello,

Dumb question for all of the experts:

In a beam antenna, such as a Yagi, Quad, Hexbeam, Moxon square, etc
what purpose does the REFLECTOR server during RECEIVE???
Does it enhance the received signal any at all, or, in the case of a quad,
are you receiving only as if you only had a vertical loop antenna??

Hi Ken,

Antennas work the same in both directions, so to speak. The reflector
and directors offer the same benefits to both receive and transmit.
In a sense they distort the medium around them to present variations
in phase such that they add/subtract in a convergence with the
"driven" element. They are the optical equivalent of lens elements in
a complex lens which aid in correcting aberrations and
enhancing/increasing magnification.

In isolation, the reflector for a receiver acts as a shield blocking
signals arriving from behind the reflector. The success of that
blocking action is not complete, but through spacing with the driven
element can produce a range of responses which are offset by other
considerations (like matching impedance) varying along with those
changes.

Receiving and transmitting antennas are reciprocal. They behave identically
in performance and radiation pattern for either direction of transmission.
It's just another law of nature, the word of God, or a scientific dictate
according to your view of the World.
