want to learn more about antenna designs

Could someone point me to a web site or a book that explains how antenna
works and why there are so many different shapes?

E.g. vertical rod, yagi, horn, parabolic, tin can, ...

Although I have electrical engineer background (long ago), I'm not
interested in mathmatical formulas, just conceptual explanations so that I
know what type of antenna to use in what situation.

The ARRL Antenna Book is a good start.
