Hi OM
I have a SteppIR 40-6 vertical on the peak of a 3500 sq ft metal roof.
I like it.

What "works best " is a nebulous notion, especially over such a wide
frequency range.
If you haven't reviewed a few texts, at least the ARRL stuff, do so and then
get back to us.
If you have, my apologies and a few simplifications:
A pole mounted vertical with no ground plane must necessarily be a 1/2 wave
antenna.
Traps are lossy;
Full-size, resonant, matched antennas "work best".
