Thru the glass antenna & tinted glass

Yes, the tint does affect performance. Find a location where there is not
any tint is the way around it. The glass in the windshield is the
insulator that separates to conductors, forming a capacitor. The tint, to
the best of my understanding, conducts, and screws up the matching, if
nothing else.

Hi,

I just traded in my very old 1985 Jeep Cherokee for a 1996 model. The

1996
model has tinted windows. I've always used a Larsen thru-the-glass

antenna for
mobile operations. Does the tint affect the antenna function? Is there

any
way around it? Thanks.

Caveat Lector September 3rd 03 03:44 PM

Radio Shack thru the glass antennas used to gave a warning
"Some auto glass has passivated glass and the antenna will not function
properly" or something to that effect

Another is from Antenna FAQ's At URL:
http://www.altwireless.com/cellular-...ntennaFAQ.html

"passivated glass (glass impregnated with tiny metal particles that render
the glass incapable of coupling RF between the inside and outside couplers).
How can I tell if the glass on my vehicle is suitable for one of Larsen’s
on-glass antennas?
First, look near a corner of a window for words that mean "sun", relate to
sun, or refer to ultraviolet or other forms of radiation. If you find terms
like "Soft-Ray", "EZE-Cool", "Solar-Coat", "Solar-Cool" or similar terms,
your glass is probably passivated and won’t work with on-glass antennas. If
you want to be 100% certain, and you don’t find helpful words on the glass,
ask a 2-way or cellular shop technician to test your glass with a
capacitance meter"

Thanks for all of the responses. Will check things out further. May just go
with a my mag mount if it presents with too much trouble.

I've been lurking here a bit, but I must report experience.
If there is an intervening conductive layer, the system is two caps in
series, nothing works.
On my old BMW 2002tii with film on the inside, I just cut the film and ran a
pair of Larsens for years.
When my son got his ticket (KD5RHI) I gave him the radio, a Kenwood 3 bander
(144, 220, 440), and he ran it on a Chevy Tahoe, Larsen's glued to the side
to clear a parking garage, with no problems; Tinted glass, no film.
Recently we tried the same Larsen's on my son's new Volvo, with the SAME
radio, the tint forced us to use a trunk lid mount, as he wasn't too keen on
cutting the film on his new Volvo.
I have not seen a glass tint cause a problem.
I HAVE seen applied films and defoggers cause problems.
So if the tint is due to an electrically conductive layer it will be an
issue.
If it's an applied film, you can cut it successfully, I did, but I kept the
car 24 years, too.
Good luck.
