PAR MON-3 Antenna VS Diamond D-130J
 

Has anyone had any experiences with this antenna good or bad.

PAR MON-3
Design frequencies: 144-174, 440-470 and 800-900 MHz. Gain: 1.7 dBi.
Impedance: 50 ohms. Pattern: Omni.

How does it stack up against the Diamond D-130J?

I had the Diamond and gave it to the garbage man. After using the
AntennaWarehouse ScanTenna
(http://users.cis.net/kingpop/Scanner/Scantenna.htm) I won't ever buy a
Discone again.

First you need to remember that a Discone has no gain.

Since you only have two choices I would pick the MON-3 simply because
they at least advertise some gain where as a discone is a unity gain
antenna.

I have one of the Pars, currently not in use. When I had it up
I wasnt really overly impressed with it. Its biggest drawback is the
UHF and 800-900mhz elements are not directly tied to the main
element, which seemed to give somewhat lower performance. Im
currently in the process of testing a discone, the "the new and improved"
scantenna, a scan king , and the Par on my VR5K. I think the VR5K
is going to give me better results than trying them on a scanner. The
Par's biggest asset is its strength, for me in Iowa when the ice storms
hit thats fairly important. To directly answer your question the discone
beats the Par for general reception. So far Im not overly impressed with
the scantenna, it works but I think its going to be too flimsy for the nasty
winters we get sometimes. I had one up before and the ice brought it
down, and I dont want to be doing antenna work when its -0 F with
20mph winds. That 1.7dbi gain figure is for VHF and since they are
using dbi instead of dbd that isnt saying much. There isnt a general
coverage recieve antenna out there that is omni directional
that has any real gain. Actually the Par is very similar in performance
to the RS 20-176 for 24.95.
