Mag Mount 2 Meter for Stealth?
 

I read a thread recently about "Loft Antennas". And I will most likely
be facing a similar situation, putting antennas in my attic because of
HOA restrictions. I wonder how a mag mount would work installed in an
attic with a lead to my shack? How about if I placed a four foot
diameter piece of sheet metal on the attic floor and put the mag mount
in the center? Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Should work okay -- I've used a metal serving platter on the floor
with a mag mount dual bander and it hit local repeaters fine.

Could also try your refrigerator, stove, or perhaps a furnace/central
air system in your attic.

I seem to recall a gadget called a "ventenna" or something similar
disguised to look like a standard vent pipe -- look in the back of QST.

Hi OM,

Simple enough to do. But if it doesn't work, shuck the mag-mount;
punch a hole in the sheet metal and attach a real antenna mount. I've
heard the hosannahs sung for thru-glass and mag-mounts, complete with
mumble and jive talk about how they work, but when I can hit my
buddy's 2M repeater 5 Miles away from my basement with a 0.5W HT, it
simply says almost anything can do the job.

I saw someone who uses a large pizza pan for the radials. The mag
mount sits well on the pan and it was the perfect size for the
radials.

The picture was of the pan on a post outside about roof level, but it
should do as well as the radials inside.

My mobile whip is 5/8 wave with a nub about the size of my pinkie in
diameter and two inches long. If I mounted it on a piece of tin
(covered by shingles) on my roof, the neighbors would never know it
was there even if they looked for it. Chances are that wx won't
bother it in any way either. This antenna has been with me since
April of 1979 and been over 100 miles per hour. It has killed several
birds that didn't expect it when they flew over the car, but it is
still working well to this day. (I used it less than an hour ago.)

the stainless steel whip, especially if painted flat black, will be
extremely difficult to spot if you know to look for it and even harder
if you aren't looking for it.

Yep will work (;-)

My 2m antenna is a mag mount on a cookie sheet in my Ham shack on the second
story of my house.
SWR is fine (u should check it as I had to trim the vertical radiator a bit)

Can raise several repeaters in the area and simplex about 10 miles or so.
