Building a cheap easy cb antenna

Why are the ones you buy dont have ground radials. Like the "sticks"
they use on trucks?

I am guessing they are 5/8 wavelength and have some sort of coil inside
them I cant see.

I am not wanting "super performance" But something that is decent.
