![]() "private" wrote in message ... ... In country away from the geomagnetic pole there is nothing to worry about statics and other high energy protons emitted by the Sun. The most dangerous rays are X-rays emitted during solar stroms. these reach the earth at the sped of ligh (8 min after the flare/CME) and thay are alrady away. Most of them are captured by the magnetic field and some are "converted" in light trough auroras. The main risks is for atronauts inboad of ISS that are at the first places, and passagers of jets But usually they endure only the equivalent of a radiography Then there are CME which gaz enveloppe reach the earth about 2 days after the eruption. Not worry, they only "attack" the ionosphere (D-region, E-F layers) in creating mainly blackouts in Scandinavian/Can. countries Sometimes the static is so huge that gaz pipeline have to be monitored with specialized forecasters. In some circumstances huge relay can blow up and create blackoput over large cities. At last, these X-rays can also saturated or even damage orbital satellites (their CCD and other sensors), or decrease their orbit. I think that NORAD has much much job for the moment in rectifying orbits of dozen satellites. Here are some anomalies : http://www.astrosurf.com/lombry/Docu...ailure1998.gif More comments on my website but in French (although there is a translate tool on the menu too) about Auroras: http://www.astrosurf.com/lombry/aurore.htm 73's ON4SKY, LX3SKY (SKY you know why now, Hi!) |
