The original article describing the "Field Day Special" antenna can now
be downloaded from
http://eznec.com/Amateur/Articles/Field_Day_Special.pdf. Or you can find
it and other articles listed at http://eznec.com/Amateur/Articles/.

The "Field Day Special" has been a favorite of mine for more than 20
years. Quite a number of other people have built them, and reports I've
received have been uniformly favorable.

The inability to read pdf files is a major disadvantage. Much web
content is posted in this format. If you're able to download files from
the web, it can be downloaded and viewed with the free Acrobat reader;
if you're not able to download files OR view pdf files, you're missing
out on a great deal of what the web has to offer.

There is no best antenna for Field Day. The Field Day Special is ideal
for me because I usually backpack all my equipment, which precludes
rotatable antenna and puts a big premium on weight. The FD Special is
very light weight and its pattern just covers the majority of the U.S.
from here on the West Coast, giving the highest possible gain consistent
with the coverage I need. Most Field Day participants neither backpack
nor operate from the West Coast, so different criteria apply. The
antenna might be useful to others for either Field Day or fixed location
use because it's inexpensive, provides a good F/B ratio, and can easily
be switched to reverse direction. On the other hand, it's a single band
antenna (which can be designed for any single band). But it would be a
lousy Field Day antenna to use from, say, Ohio or anywhere near the
middle of the population concentration of the U.S.

Richard:

I think this URL may have information to help you with .pdf files, I am not
sure, I have NEVER used Web Tv.... the page doesn't seem formatted properly
for my browser--but still, the info can be viewed with patience--hope is
better for you...

Hi All,

There is a very simple solution. Google will convert the PDF to HTML
once its robot reads the page. It has been doing this for several
years now.

How long it takes for Google to revisit the site to accomplish this is
another matter (not generally very long though).
