What Makes an "End fed wire" a "Longwire" Antenna?
 

IOW, what length must an end fed wire be to exhibit the
characteristics of a "LongWire" antenna ?

When operating at 7MHz, is a 240 foot long endfed wire considered to
be a LongWire antenna ?

From the IEEE Dictionary: "long-wire antenna - A wire antenna
that, by virtue of its considerable length in comparison with
the operating wavelength, provides a directional radiation
pattern."

One can observe the "directional radiation pattern" just
beginning to take effect on a one wavelength end-fed antenna.

commonly it's always be thought of as a 1 wavelength wire or longer so to
answer you 240' question @ 7 mhz it would be a longwire antenna. it would
be just under longwire status at 3.5 mhz.

Vees, rhombics, and Beverage antennas are long wires according to Kraus.
The long wire is usually 2 WL or more.

240 feet is 1.7 WL at 7 MHz which is less than 2 WL.

Hummm. Most sources I have state 1 WL as the
deciding length to be a longwire...But I agree, as
far as performance, 1 WL, ain't much of a longwire...
Even 2 WL is no big deal...You need several WL to
really brown the food to a crispness equal to any decent
yagi laying around...I've never really run a longwire...
But a friend did years ago...Was 500 ft on 10-15
meters...It's directive, but it's also a static magnet at
times...Sometimes he could draw quite large arcs to
ground...I'd probably stick in some kind of resister to bleed
off static...MK
