Why is it that US citizen's (American) lives all seem to revolve
around GUNS and weapons of one sort and another?

Are you all scared of being attacked? If so, by who?

By you Brits of course. You guys did it twice already you know.

Actually, my crime rate would go down. No more seat belt tickets. :-)

That's close. The police affect crime rates after the fact by passing
the suspects over to the justice system, where they may or may not be
locked up, hopefully depending upon whether they are guilty or not.
Note that I didn't say innocent, we don't use that concept in the US,
but that is a different story. Not guilty does not always mean innocent.

Being locked up affects the crime rate from the back end, while self
defense, in all of its different forms, affect it on the front end. And
I will state, most happily, that there are many non-gun ways to "defend"
yourself. For instance, owning a noisy dog is a good defense against
the common burglar.

Personally I keep my .38 special loaded with rat shot, and my Ruger with
a follow up in case they don't understand the noise and slight pain.

Why would the mention of a particular type of tool frighten you so
much that you would be compelled to interject a disparaging comment
about it? The world and usenet are very big places and not all of it
is the UK.

Not scared - just possessing health insurance against criminals.

Police do not *prevent* crime. Police only try to catch a criminal
*after* a crime has been committed - sometimes long after. Crime
took a nosedive when Texas adopted the concealed carry permit
which is reciprocal with another dozen states. Someone who is in
a position to know told me that one out of every 10 adult males
in my home county has a concealed carry permit. I can drive from
Arizona to North Carolina while legally carrying a concealed Colt
45. (It would be coast to coast except for the left coast.)

Yes, all of the crooked cops committing crimes would go away.

That would be by "whom". In some cases, each other.

What's to say that the possession of firearms by the citizens of this
country hasn't prevented the invasion of this country? (or that it
hasn't.?)

It is hard to know what 'didn't' happen for a reason....

The ferocity and casualty rates during the American Civil War were not
exceeded until Hiroshima. Just imagine what would happen if Civil War
should break out again.

The Normans

Can't understand what you are worried about. The Normans only had bows
and arrows. Range about 300 yards.

King Harald might have had some comment for you, had he been coherent after
the Norman arrow pierced his eye & brain. He was subsequently sliced and
diced, and English history got a serious dose of Gallic flavor.
