I have an RT-70A/GRC that I'm getting ready to power up in a couple of weeks. Would my discone suffice? That might depend on what you want to do on 6. Local repeaters? Meteor Scatter? SSB DX? I use a Cushcraft vertical (R6??), but I don't operate a whole lot on 6. I have done some Meteor Scatter with it, some SSB, and some local repeaters. Post what your goals are for 6, and no doubt you'll get a big response!! 73 Dave N0HNJ I'm limited to FM simplex since the RT70 only outputs FM and has no offset that I'm aware of. Dave, If the discone is rated for 6 meters, go for it. I have talked to people on 6 who were using discones, even though I am horizontally polarized. I would not spend any money on a 6m FM simplex radio. Tam/WB2TT |

Have to agree with TAM- but dont expect too much- as a Discone antenna
is a no - gain, ultra wide bandwidth antenna (great for a scanner, listening to several bands at once, but for signal strength- forget it)! When six is open, however, all bets are off! Remember many in the '60's running Heathkit "Sixers" working dx (1/2-1 watt output, and super-regen reciever)! Tho, would be more effecient with a good yagi, and S.S.B., you might be suprised with the results. and remember: 6 meters also tends to open during the winter solstus , as well as in the spring/summer times! Good Luck- Jim NN7K Tam/WB2TT wrote: N0HNJ I'm limited to FM simplex since the RT70 only outputs FM and has no offset that I'm aware of. Dave, If the discone is rated for 6 meters, go for it.
