What is a good commercially available antenna for 6 meters. I

That might depend on what you want to do on 6. Local repeaters? Meteor
Scatter? SSB DX? I use a Cushcraft vertical (R6??), but I don't operate a
whole lot on 6. I have done some Meteor Scatter with it, some SSB, and
some local repeaters. Post what your goals are for 6, and no doubt you'll
get a big response!!

I'm limited to FM simplex since the RT70 only outputs FM and has no
offset that I'm aware of.

Dave,

If the discone is rated for 6 meters, go for it. I have talked to people on
6 who were using discones, even though I am horizontally polarized. I would
not spend any money on a 6m FM simplex radio.

There is a lot of truth in what you say.

Have to agree with TAM- but dont expect too much- as a Discone antenna
is a no - gain, ultra wide bandwidth antenna (great for a scanner,
listening to several bands at once, but for signal strength- forget it)!

When six is open, however, all bets are off! Remember many in the '60's
running Heathkit "Sixers" working dx (1/2-1 watt output, and super-regen
reciever)! Tho, would be more effecient with a good yagi, and S.S.B.,
you might be suprised with the results. and remember: 6 meters also
tends to open during the winter solstus , as well as in the
spring/summer times! Good Luck- Jim NN7K
