Imaginary Standing Waves?

A fairly elaborate paper about transmission line waves and impedances is
linked below, and might be good reading for some posters to this NG who
believe that standing waves do not exist.

If standing waves don't exist then violins, guitars, ukuleles, Cellos,
BAse Fiddles, pianos and other stringed instruments don't work!!

True. Terman shows the details of a "standing-wave detector for a
coaxial line." on page 105 of his 1955 edition. It`s a slotted (trough)
line.

Without a reflected wave there would be no interference pattern which as
Dave points out can be observed with the naked eye in some stringed
instruments, especially with the help of a good photographic series.

A frequency adjustable strobe light can also be useful for demonstrating
the effect.

Those are outside the ham band effects, everyone knows the rules change once
one is inside the band edges.

At that point real imaginary standing waves become virtual imaginary
standing waves.

Howdy,

Then there's always the naked ear.
