For receiving purposes just bring a thin plastic insulated antenna wire all
the way to the receiver.

Neither coax or balun serve any any useful purpose except make balun and
coax salesmen happier.

Go ahead. It's a simple matter to try.

If you wish to spend any money usefully on the project then make or buy a
receiver preselector. (That is if your receiver does not have a built-in
preselector.)

(Do NOT confuse a preselector with an antenna tuner or impedance matching
network which is used for transmitting purposes. They serve different
purposes)
