I agree but it has nothing to do with "facing off". Coherent voltage waves flowing in opposite directions are unaffected by each other. Coherent voltage waves flowing in the same direction merge into one wave. The events that happens at an impedance discontinuity are reflections which causes coherent waves to flow in the same direction and therefore merge.
