You are correct, many people have unprotected computers with outdated
o/s and or no virus software.

Example is at my university they processed a weeks worth of email in 24 hours
due to that nasty virus that was going around a few months ago. Our mainframe
ftp server gets requests from almost every pc on the campus that is infected,
campus net can't or won't pull the plug on their ip address.

Best thing I can suggest is check out following sites and get protected.

http://grc.com lots of info no charge and learn how to protect your pc.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ no charge ad aware v 6.0
finds and then removes many types of spy ware and ad tracking software that
is installed when you visit websites (without your knowledge or permission !)

Another couple things that are important IMO. Get ZoneAlarm. And then
as an added protection, get a Proxy server such as Proxomitron. (free,
so I'll forgive the strange name)

I have another firewall on my D-Link router, so I'm running two
firewalls, and a proxy server.

The proxy eliminates all ad's from a website that don't originate from
that website, which is a big source of spyware. It kills popups too, and
several other annoying things such as converts blinkies to bold type,
kills nosey Javascripts, does selective cookie accept/refusal and lots
of other handy configurable things.

The only downside is that when you go to a site that has lots of the
intrusive stuff on it, (and it is an education to see which sites do
this) it will take a little longer to load the page.

Remember, Mister Website is NOT your friend!

Now what I want is a mailreader that will refuse all exe's, bat's,
etcetera and leave them on the server, never to reach my machine. (no, I
will not use Outlook in any shape or form) I haven't looked too hard,
anyone know of some good ones?

Reg, you must have a point. Apparently it's not antennas.

What has happened to you?

That Saddam's body is still alive (or so we are told) and now in the
hands of the CIA is of no consequence whatsoever.

Where are the so-called propagandised weapons of mass destruction, 45
minutes launching time, which were Government's lying excuses for
occupying the country, once again in a period of 15 years, deliberately
and intentionally sending it back with missiles and splinter-bombs to
the stone age?

The whole world knows where the weapons of mass destruction are to be found.

But these are trivial matters.

The Western multi-nationals, conglomerates, corporations, banks, have
now successfully achieved their short-term objectives of completing
control over the Middle Eastern oil fields and regions through which the
pipelines to American power stations, plastics industries and guzzling
petrol tanks have to be fed.

What, and in which region, are the next financial and military
objectives of Big Brother ? But isn't it quite obvious?

Changing to a new email address, and setting my ISP's spam filter on
medium high, eliminated most of my spam. I get 2 o 3 a week.

Cec,

I thought you'd never ask. ;o)

Regarding solenoidal, single-layer, antenna loading coils -

Rule 1.

Inductance cannot change with frequency. With ANY coil, inductance between
the end points depends solely on dimensions and number of turns. As you
know, calculating formulae can be found almost anywhere. But to be very
exact with a long coil, an appreciable fraction of a wavelength, add the
inductance of a straight wire of the same length. After all, the coil may
consist of less than one turn as occurs when a coarse helix of wire is
pulled out straight. For a demonstration use program SOLNOID3. Read the
notes.

Rule 2.

Self-capacitance of a multi-turn, fairly close-wound coil consists of two
parts, Ca and Cb, both of which can be considered to be in shunt with the
coil to form a parallel tuned circuit. The structure does in fact behave
like this and has a measurable resonant frequency.

Ca is the same as the capacitance between the two halves of a dipole of the
same overall length and diameter as the coil. Matters become very
complicated as the spacing between turns increases

Cb is the capacitance between N adjacent turns ALL IN SERIES with each
other. So as N increases the resultant fast becomes very small. As spacing
between turns increases Cb decreases even faster. This is intuitively true.

All the above is calculable from dimensions. As is done in LOADCOIL and some
other programs. I'm sure somebody will let me know if a significant error
is found.

Sorry I am unable to provide references. I doubt if there are any. I have
made measurements.

Why not ask Yuri ? He sounds like an expert.

Reg Edwards December 19th 03 10:32 AM

Cecil,

There's a little check you can make on the accuracy of program SOLNOID3
regarding the self-resonant frequency of a solenoid.

The resonant frequency is due to the stray capacitance of the coil being in
shunt with the inductance.

The program allows the length of a coil to be stretched out until it is as
long as the wire it was wound with. Throughout the process, as L and C
change with coil length, the self-resonant frequency is calculated.

Resonant frequency is calculated up to the point when the original N turns
are stretched out into a straight length of wire. You can do a simple check
using your space-man's pocket calculator.

Does the program-calculated resonant frequency coincide with the resonant
frequency of the straight wire considered as a 1/2-wave dipole ?

Incidentally, when the coil is only partly stretched out, the program can be
used to estimate the resonant frequency of "Slinky's". Never having had a
Slinky I cannot say precisely how accurate this might be.

Happy Xmas to you and yours and all that sort of thing.

Reg.

Hi Reg, that answers my question. I'm glad you didn't go the
"lumped" route. Do you have a program that calculates the delay
through a real-world coil?

Incidentally, when the coil is only partly stretched out, the program can be
used to estimate the resonant frequency of "Slinky's". Never having had a
Slinky I cannot say precisely how accurate this might be.

Did you take into account that some Slinky's are made out of
plastic. :-)
