Collins Question: Emblems

This is probably a very foolish question but I need an answer:

What is the difference between round emblem and wide emblem Collins gear?

Thanks in advance for the answer.

The winged emblem was replaced by the round emblem in the early
1960s.

Collins Question: Emblems

The round (meatball) emblem came out came out in the 70's and replaced
the traditional "winged" emblem. Certain production changes, some quite
significant, accompanied the change in the Collins logo. Thus, when
buying or selling, the round emblem connotes later production
equipment......

Which is really why someone cares about the emblem. They want one
specific to the era of production, and the emblem is an easy way
of denoting them. All those ads seeking Collins equipment with a specific
emblem aren't there because the people think one emblem is nicer looking
than the other.

The most significant difference is in the KWM-2 transceiver.
The round-emblem type, which appeared around 1969,
used two plug-in relays for T/R switching, whereas the earlier
winged-emblem KWM-2 used telephone style relays.
If a old-style relay fails, it can be a major
headache trying to wire in the replacement.

The very newest KWM-2 and KWM-2A's used teflon wiring instead of vinyl
insulation. The vinyl insulation is easy to scorch
if your soldering skills aren't first-rate.

It's easy to scorch even if your soldering skills *are* first-rate.

It's that layered turret construction that makes things difficult.

I have had numerous winged KWM2A's that were teflon wired, and had
the full set of upgrades, as shown in the KWM2 update sheets.

As far as I can tell, the obsession with the meatball is simply because
it is the newest example of very old technology.
