Anyone have 1972 QST? Need HW-16 mod article
 

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone might have a 1972 QST on hand who could scan
the article (I believe on page 50) showing the 20-meter mod for the
HW-16. I have such a rig here that's already modded up a bit, so it
won't hurt to add another!

There were actually several modification articles in the early 1970s for the
HW-16
CQ and QST - both had articles on the 20 meter mod

HW-16 guru ??!?? - I don't know about that...Naw just like hackin them! It's
a fun radio for messing around, cheap and plenty of them...

But the real info you need isn't in those articles...

The 19.545 XTAL you need is in a HC-17U holder - 16 pf cap -

International Crystal (800-725-1426) price 3 years ago was $19.95 and 2 wks
ship date. Ask for Bernie - This mod is not in ICM's database so they'll
gave you a bunch of excuses - tell um what your doing - if that don't help -
mention my Name WD0HCO Bismarck Wichy and you want to order the same 19.545
XTAL he did...

Do NOT order through their website... ICM, like most others has lost all
their experienced help - they do know about clocks in Micro's but the radio
XTAL business has dried up and most of the old timers have left.

FYI's... the receiver can be made to go just about anywhere - sensitivity
drops out about 25 - 26 Mhz so you can use an MRF-102 to peak things up a
bit on 10. 30 mtrs would also be an excellent choice - especially during
contest weekends but finding odd ball 5.05 mhz FT-243's will be a pain.

Transmitter mods - final coil - some articles had you take a long nose
pliers and count the turns and pull out wire to solder your tap. Too much
trouble!

Unsolder the taps and completely take the coil out and un-roll the wire.
Replace it with 18 Ga plastic insulated wire (Your choice of color!). Lay
this wire straight on the floor and measure out your 18 ga wire to the same
size. Scrape the insulation at the taps points and tinned them. Add a little
twist to make a loop and rewind on the coil form. Re-install and solder the
tap wires to it. Works just as well but looks much nicer.
