Hello,
My grandpa has this nice old boat anchor in his basement. A prototype
from when he built them at Collins. He may go QRT in the next few
years, and wants me to have the rig running and up. We need this
capacitor--he says it drifts badly without it.
Where should I check for it? Anybody familiar with this exciter?

Hi Jonathan,
I've already posted a message asking for more info about that capacitor,
but I just wanted to thank you for posting the pictures of your grandfather's
prototype. It's interesting- the meter is on the right side, like the bandswitching
310B-3. But on the 310B-1, the meter is on the left, even though the meter
switch (grid-plate) remains on the right. I've always thought that was odd.
Also, the chrome trim bars on your prototype are long, and not centered.
Were those taken from another model and placed on the 310 prototype the
way they were for some logical reason?

Of course, the plastic switch labels were probably added much later.
But the knobs are unique, and I'm guessing they are original.

If you haven't already, you really should "interview" your grandfather
about everything he remembers about his work at Collins. There's a
Collins history group online, and I'm sure they love getting the info.

Well, enough babbling from me. I just wanted to say thanks. And
good luck to both of us in eliminating that pesky drift :)
