Email: hey maintain data on all the old Boatanchor rigs as to
crystal requirements!

Sent email inquiry to ICM and they came back with a very quick reply.

Each crystal would cost about $57.00!!! Yikes!!
Sounds like it is time to kludge up an oscillator.

Thanks for your help.

That seems a bit high -- but maybe an odd crystal holder? or
high precision spec?

I would also try JAN crystals -- for price shopping.

I am not familiar with the National -- odd crystal holder?

Make sure that ICM did not quote you for:

1. A high precision crystal (they may do that for this one since it
determines IF)

2. Entire L6 assembly
( Replacing the entire L6 shield can -- as described in W1FSN NC-300
revision - page 18 of 18)
ftp://bama.sbc.edu/downloads/nationa...sn/300fsn.djvu

ICM likely has the documentation for that entire mod -- and may be
referencing that -- and may be more than you want.

I was interested in doing the mods as outlined in the above referenced
field service notes.
I had downloaded the info from bama a long time ago and am just now
starting to get the rx into working codition.

Xtals are used in upper/lower side band select which replaces L6
assembly. I a surprised to
learn that ICM is able to research the NC-300 that well. These guys must
be good!

Royden R. Freeland founded International Crystal Manufacturing Company
(ICM) -- a true garage operation start in early 1950s. He was a great asset
to the radio industry.
http://www.icmfg.com/

In 1978, Royden Freeland Sr. and his wife were killed in an airplane crash.
The ICM operation was then continued by their son, Royden Freeland Jr.
taking day to day control of operations.

They have a very DEEP knowledge library of radios.

They were a staple for the land mobile radio service (Motorola, GE, RCA,
Johnson, etc.)
and Collins selected them as a major crystal supplier.

They have traditionally been amateur radio / experimenter friendly.

My suspicion is that this radio is sufficiently drifty to begin with that
using a high precision crystal is probably a waste of money. But I could
see someone recommending it, and it wouldn't hurt anything.

I rather recommend this modification.

They are good, and they have been around a long time. They were making
the kits for the NC-300 when it was a current production product, and
they still have all the original documentation for everything they ever did.
