AR88 woes!

Oh dear! I think I've hit a bad snag with my AR88D restoration. I was trying
to solder a lead back onto one of those trimmer caps (I mean condensers!)
under the chassis (in the front box). It is C22 (a 2-12 pf air trimmer,
range 3 high end osc). The solder would not take and then after applying an
80 watt iron for some time the cap itself suddenly started to melt! I
stopped immediately. Have I destroyed it? Are spares possible to get or can
I use another type in this instance of desperation?

Check for shorts. If it is send me a picture & size and I will go look in
the junk box and see if I have something close for you.

Thanks Paul. But range 3 (the one affected) seems to work OK. And I have
some beehives if I have to do a dirty fix! But, tell me, does your junk box
have those tubular trimmers 2-2pf?

I would need a picture and have a go at it in the Garage. The garage is my
junk box, especially according to my wife :~)

I have old chassis laying around to scrounge from and boxes of unsorted
assorted parts. It is summer and I could use some time going over some
stuff with the garage doors open.

Send a pix here also- I have a good stock of piston caps- if that is what
you mean by tubular.

Dale W4OP Yes, that's what I mean! But I can't post pictures to a
newsgroup can I? Its definitely C22 2-12 pf that I need, although range 3
is actually working!

I have a new problem and can't understnd the reason for it. The tested
voltage between grids of V1, 2 and others to the slider of the RF gain
control is meant to be - 1.2v. It was OK. Since I've re-capped and changed
a few resistors, it is +.5. Any ideas?
